We tip very well (20%+) but if a server does not do their job (check on drinks, get orders right, etc... things THEY are responsible for) I don't think they should EXPECT to get a tip. I am talking if they aren't doing their job, not if it is the kitchen's fault etc.

Mistakes happen though, in terms of getting your order right. I think it's how they handle an incorrect order that's important.

I think we can't always be sure of the conditions the server is working under. We know for sure he/she is not making much in terms of hourly wages. If a restaurant isn't busy, I might judge a little more quickly. But if the restaurant is busy? You don't know if they're short-staffed or whatever. The server should not be punished for that. I try to err on the side of "benefit of the doubt" and "generosity."
I'm with @elf828 on this one, mainly because my H LOOOOOVES Frank Sinatra and everything he does annoys me.
@armfruit I much prefer Harry Connick Jr's Christmas Pandora station....and I thumbs down all of the Sinatra jams that come through.
LOVE Harry Connick Jr!
ETA: I effing HAAAAATTTEEEE that Christmas Mariah Carey song. When I worked retail at Christmas they played it 8000000 times per shift. I want to gouge my eyes out when I hear that one. Also, that horrible Last Christmas song.
Speaking of Christmas music, I love Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" and play it on repeat for days at the start of the season every year. I have also been known to play it at random throughout the year. Because AMAZING.
So I guess my UO is I LOVE MARIAH CAREY. I'm listening to my MC Pandora station right now. :x
I used to like Mariah Carey. But then I heard her say her voice has 8 octaves which is more notes than a piano. I just couldn't anymore.
I still have her Christmas cd though.
And if I ever hear Hero on the radio I might sing along.
Tipping: If you can't afford to tip well (provided good service), you shouldn't go out to eat. H showed me pay checks from when he was a server--yes, the whole check from years ago--that he never bothered to cash because it literally wasn't worth it. The check was for 5 cents. They make NOTHING after taxes.
However, if the server is a poor server, yes, they deserve a lower tip. I'm talking about things within their control, of course, not because the restaurant is busy and short staffed, because of a kitchen mess up, etc. ----------------------------- My own UO. The whole Thor being a woman now thing (and it not being Mrs. Thor or a female version of Thor, just Thor is female)?? Who freaking cares. If you know anything about comics (I don't read them, I just know this stuff from having a comic nerd husband and doing a paper on comics in libraries), you know that their story lines change ALL THE TIME. Their histories, real identities (like Robin), they die and come back, the whole storyline changes, whatever. Thor has taken different forms before and still been Thor. He's been a frog. He's been in other people's bodies. He's even been a woman before.
The whole thing is overrated and talked about too much even if it was a new thing, but especially because it isn't a big deal because it's happened before.

I worked at the Gap during Christmas season one year in college and this NSync gem was on their playlist in the store. Even though I heard it eleventy million times, I still love it. It goes up their with Mariah.

Springs1?
LOL. Don't page her!!! We do not need that nonsense in here today!
I love Sinatra. My step dad played him all the time when I was little and he taught me how to dance to his songs. I also love Mariah Carey's music but she's gotten pretty cray cray over the years. NSYNC's whole Christmas album is great. I may own two of them because I temporarily lost one and couldn't go without.
Another tame uo... I absolutely loath leather. I hate sitting on it, I hate the feel, I hate the smell, I hate how one sticks to it... I almost backed out of buying my car because of the leather.
I think tipping is a strange social custom and I don't like it. I like my life to be more straight forward. Tell me how much the burger costs and I will tell you if I want it or not. The very idea that there is an expectation of a little something extra, defeats the idea of rewarding exceptional service. I am happy to leave a gesture of appreciation when it is warranted, but don't like that it is expected.
Feel free to tell me all about how hard wait staff has it and how I just don't understand. I have been a waitress.
@wildflower26 When you waited tables, what was your hourly pay rate??? Because here in Georgia, it's $2.13/hour.
That's the thing... it's NOT a gesture of appreciation, it's how servers get paid. If they don't make it in tips, the restaurant is supposed to make up the difference between "tip wage" and minimum wage. Until we change that system, then I understand it being a bit of an "expectation" on the part of the server. I was a cater waitress off and on for years, and I made an average of $11 an hour and didn't have to tip out runners, bartenders, bar backs, ect like I did when I worked in a conventional restaurant.
I totally understand what you're saying, @wildflower26, about wanting the SYSTEM to change (as in, tell me what this actually costs and I'll pay it or not), but unless that happens, I don't think it's fair to punish servers for the system sucking.

@codypup - I'll take it further and say pigtails look stupid on anyone over the age of ~6yrs old. No exceptions.
@wildflower26 - I think servers should be paid minimum wage, and tipping can be done if you feel service was exceptional. Mainly because I think paying waitstaff under minimum wage artificially pushes the costs of employment onto the customer when that's a cost that should be part of the overall business model especially if they are legally required to make up the difference. It seems like that system is set-up for abuse by both employers and employees. While the base cost of food may increase but if you're not tipping an extra 20% then the total cost of the meal isn't going to be that different.
I've heard from a few waiter friends that some restaurants make all of the servers pool their tips together then divy them out amongst the entire tipped staff where others each server keeps what they actually earned after tipping bussers, bartenders, etc. I prefer the latter so that servers are actually rewarded according to the work they do. I don't think it's fair that a great waiters tip money goes to helping out a subpar waiter's earnings.
As a general rule, I think pigtails on adult women look stupid*.
*There are a few exceptions to this, but I'm talking in general. People who wear them while working out may get a pass, for example.
I make no exceptions.
Lol. This UO is brought to you courtesy of a middle age woman who visited my store yesterday - in pigtail braids and a business suit. She looked like a woman-child playing dress up. It was bizarre.

I guess this is a UO based off of my lending money post but I don't understand why you should only lend money if you're going to consider it a gift. A loan is something to be repaid so why have the expectation that you're giving the money without expecting to be repaid? I get that people get stiffed a lot but then my thinking is don't call it a loan if you know you're just giving them the money and won't get it back.
Did @mamosey ever mention our neighbor? He's an old bachelor who claims to have sang with Sinatra. He mentions this EVERY time I see him. He also claims John McCain lost to him in a foot race and he (McCain) is still sore about it. If you've ever seen the movie Big Fish, he's just like the dad. My wife can't stand him, I on the other hand don't mind him and regularly give him love advice. One last story, the first time he met R, he asked " where'd you get that from?" I wanted to say " duh, babies r us". Instead I said my wife! Ha I'm sure going to miss him when we move.
@Firefly9 The Thor thing just seems like they're pandering, to me. I know that he's had different forms, but it still seems stupid to entirely re-gender the character. Why not have Sif gain the power of Thor? Sif is badass. I get the need for strong female characters, but just write an interesting new one rather than gender bend a male character?

If you're loaning to family or friends it's better to consider the money gone (while hoping for it back), unless your going to draw up a contract and go through collections companies or something if they fail to pay you back. It's also less stress for you if you don't loan money you NEED.
I understand pigtail braids for situations where you need to wear a helmet, like horseback riding, or biking. I have tons of hair and a low ponytail that would fit below the brim of these would be so uncomfortable with all that hair stuck to my neck. Otherwise, no.
Ok. Helmet wearers get a pigtail pass in the Codypup rule book. But ONLY if you undo the pigtails once the helmet is removed.
Guise, I have a confession that can't wait until tomorrow. I take back everything I ever said about wanting overalls to come back in style. I've been seeing them more and more lately, and not ONE person has pulled them off successfully. They look stupid and childish and I always wonder if their overall clips touch the bathroom floor, because gross.
I hereby officially change my stance to anti-overall.
When I was in grad school, a friend took his shoes to be repaired, and I went with him to pick then up. In order to get the shoes, we had to stand in the parking lot and listen to the shoe repairman sing Frank Sinatra songs in Russian.
All this frank Sinatra talk got me thinking of that.
Just wondering how you tip on a dinner where you get expensive drinks.
Say you are out for a meal and you order a bottle of wine, and you top off your own glass all night. Do you tip 20% on the price of the wine, or do you tip x number of dollars on the bottle? DH and I go back and forth on what is the best way to tip in this situation.
I'd just tip on the bill total, and leave out the wine price factor completely.
I hate Christmas songs in general until Christmas Day. Too many years of retail, listening to the same songs for 10 + hours a day from the day after Halloween until Christmas. For a long time I even hated Christmas. I'm over that now.
Also, I despise the "Keep calm and...." memes.
GIve me all the Christmas songs especially the Alvin and the Chipmunks song.

I meant from a financial standpoint that if being repaid never happened I'd be ok. So, my budget isn't dependent on me getting that $$ back. But yea, I still expect the person to do so.

B-)
Thanks for the exception (see avatar)! I've tried several different methods and pigtail braids are the only thing to work for me during endurance triathlon. I know others manage a ponytail, but for me, if it's low enough to go under the bike helmet, it's too low for the run (and annoying on the swim).

I agree! A spinoff from Thor would be awesome, Sif is badass. She can eventually get her own Marvel movie My H says in an alternate future Marvel universe, he was a woman already, and in a "What if..." thing, Jane picked up the hammer.
@iwubrory We had a loan with family on our first place (deposit, 1st and last). But we have also lent for the same for siblings. We also helped buy a car for a sibling. It was a fully written out contract of a loan. To me family is there to help a first time on their own feet young adult with no credit history.
Re:pig tails. 1 braid hits me in the face every time I bend down. Two stay to the sides. Bending down to collect eggs, or what ever and getting hit in the face every time gets old real fast. I also do the two braids when running equipment because of the safety gear. One braid takes too much room in the back and the equipment doesn't fit right.
I have not tipped for really poor service. DH and I are the only ones in the pub, and we can hear the waitress talking about how I am so difficult because I asked for dressing on the side (of my salad). We could hear the entire conversation, where she admitted she forgot to put in our order. I went out of my way to tip the chief, but not the waitress.
I'm not used to a tip being expected though. A tip is for something above and beyond, not for doing your job. Here we do because it's a poorly paid job, but fundamentally it's a broken system.
My UO: i think people should have to take a driving test for different environments. City driving Is vastly different then country road driving, summer driving is different then blizzard driving. It should be an endorsement(like a m1-motorcycle), but people should have the basics down on how to drive on a gravel highway, or how to drive around blind corners and hairpin corners.
