LO's First ER Visit

This is so not a milestone I was looking forward to.

LO was cruising along the coffee table when he tripped over his own feet and fell on his bottom. I picked him up to find a mouth full of blood and a deep cut on his tongue. I called our 24 hour nurse line and they said to bring him in. So we went to the E.R. covered in blood with a screaming baby. DH is out of town on work so thank goodness for my friend who went with me.

They did his vitals, did medicine for the pain, and gave him a Popsicle and some Pedialyte. He wasn't a fan of the orange flavored medicine and kept pushing the nurse away with his foot as she got close. He is going to have a hard time with the nipple on the bottle for a few days so we will get a lot of practice with the cup.

DH will probably take the rest of his shift off so he can come home in the a.m. to be with LO. I told him there was nothing he can really do, but he wants to help with him while he is in pain and it is my birthday on Friday so we can spend it together.

LO is sleeping soundly, and I just can't fall asleep because I am worried about the bleeding starting again.

Aww poor little guy! ER visits are more traumatic for us than the kids I think! So scary, glad he is doing ok thought!

Thanks! There was so much blood I couldn't believe. I handled everything fine: stopped the bleeding, called the RN line, got my friend to drive (we were at her house) while I sat in back and kept the blood from flowing, and that was when the tears started.

Aw poor thing! The bright side is that the tongue heels super duper fast. Ive bitten straight through mine twice when I was a kid doing rollerblading tricks. It was a ton of blood but fully healed in just a few days.

That is what the doctor said! I'm so glad he didn't bite all the way through, just partially. We can't figure out exactly how though because the cut is on top and his teeth are on bottom.

The intake nurse was driving me crazy. She asked how it happened and I explained that he was cruising along the coffee table and fell and bit his tongue. She looked at me in horror and said, "so he was on top of the coffee table?" Uh, no lady. He was holding on to the coffee table walking. I did not leave my baby on top of a coffee table.

They have the dumbest questions or rebuttals sometimes. Ds1 sat on ds2 when he was only 2 weeks old and the er dr asked if he was on top of him for an hour or so.. Umm no like maybe a minute before I came back into the room.
I'm sure they are used to seeing all sorts of cray cray stuff so they probably assume the worst but sometimes it's a judgey kinda tone they have.

Props to you for handling it so well! We had a similar scare last week but no ER visit needed - DS was pulling up on the couch and must have bit his lip when he fell back down on his butt - DH freaked but it healed fairly quickly. Hugs! >:D<

Thanks everyone! The toughest part is the eating. You can definitely tell he is uncomfortable, but he is pretty happy otherwise today. My first reaction was to handle it at home but the cut was pretty big. It looks like someone just took a big chunk out of the center of his tongue.
