Breastfeeding

Slow eater

My son is 4 weeks old and nursing sessions still take so long!  He regularly feeds off one side for 30+ minutes and then will take the other side for just as long.  He's not always actively sucking, and he's a slow gainer (not up to his birth weight yet) so I don't like to stop him.  But he doesn't get proper naps most of the day because of the drawn out nursing, which is leading to rough nights.  Not to mention I feel like we can't go anywhere because of how long I'd have to sit and nurse him.  Is there anything I can do to make him more efficient?

You're right that your LO is probably not eating that entire hour.  I second doing weighted feedings and working with a LC to try to figure out what's going on.  GL!

  • I agree you should see a LC. In the meantime, my ped LC just told me to do breast compressions during the entire feed to encourage him to eat, not just suck to help with milk transfer.
