Confuzzled by Fleece

I know that you can use fleece as a liner in a diaper, to keep baby from feeling wet.
I also know that there are diaper covers that are made of fleece.

How does it both let liquid through keeping baby dry, yet keep liquid from getting everything else wet?
What am I missing??

    This got me too at first.  Microfleece versus polar fleece like SAK said.  I had some handmade fleece covers that worked great!

    And it's not really waterproof. Ime if you use a fleece cover you will feel dampness on the outside. It just doesn't wick onto other stuff like clothes and furniture.
