November 2014 Moms

Oh crap I failed my 1 hour glucose screening!

I had a bad feeling that I would. Partly because during my first pregnancy I was on the cusp of failing. And I haven't been eating so great this time around.

Have to go back for the 3 hour test to see what's what. Hoping that because I'd stupidly just eaten lunch right before the 1 hour that I threw off the results. Anyone else do their screening yet?

Re: Oh crap I failed my 1 hour glucose screening!

  • Many people have posted about their tests but I wouldn't be too worried... normally you are asked to fast before the test so your lunch could be the culprit here. A lot of people fail the one hour and pass the three hour (including me!)

  • Hopefully you'll pass the 3 hour! Are they going to have you fast for it? I do mine around the end of August/early September. Yay...not lol. I failed my 1hr but passed the 3hr with my son. Hoping to escape the 3hr this go around, but I have a bad feeling I won't. lol

  • Many offices are foregoing the 1 hour and going straight to the 3 hr because so many fail the 1 hr.
Many offices will also tell you to eat a minimum of 3 bananas the night before the 3 hour.

  • I just took my 1hr this morning, so I guess we'll see how I do. They actually told me to not eat anything sugary 24hrs prior and to eat a light breakfast (I had eggs and toast).

  • Also, I had the orange flavor and thought it was quite delicious. I know a lot of people say it's disgusting though.

  • I failed my 1 hour at 20 weeks with a 180. The doctor wanted me to go straight to a GD diagnosis, but I asked to take the 3 hour. I passed every draw so don't feel bad there is a lot of hope for passing.

I had my 1 hour in the afternoon and had something to eat right before which I think may have been the problem. Even though it isn't a fasting test most stuff I read online said you shouldn't eat at least 1 hour before the test. I will have to retest at 28 weeks due to my size so I'm going to insist on taking it in the morning.

  • Ok now I'm worried. I've eaten junk this whole pregnancy.

  • As others have said, don't stress. Try to watch your foods, but really don't stress yet. Your dr should advise you well.

A girl I know convinced her dr she didn't need to take the 1 hr test in the first place for various reasons, including no family history of diabetes. She couldn't stop gloating about it. I just wanted to tell her to stfu, as my hg self with a diabetic dad drank the sugar. Ugh. That was 3 years ago and I still feels little resentful about how smug she was.

Last time, I failed the first test and passed the 3hr test too. I have to do the 1hr test in 4 weeks. I have the yucky red drink waiting in my fridge right now. I am not looking forward to chugging it. At least it's not the lemon one though.
At least you get to take it cold :(. Both times (orange first, fruit punch second) I had to drink mine hot. Made it so much worse! Bleh

eta* I'm hoping this OB will do things differently lol.

  • Why would you refuse the test?

I didn't have risk factors and I had GD diabetes with my last. It's completely treatable, and can only help the baby to treat, not harm.

  • Can you opt back in??

Definitely talk to your MW about it!

  • Not yet, it'll be around 28w I think. I failed the one hour last time. The MFM said if I fail the one hour this time and it isn't by much we can do a modified test next, instead of the three hour. Because of my already chronic migraines, fasting is hard. It's doable if I can get my stuff done ASAP in the am. But the three hour means still four hours of no food and drinking that awful drink on top of it (the three hour drink is worse than the one hour-they're slightly different I guess) made me really sick last time and triggered a major migraine. They don't really want to purposely bring on another migraine on top of the 15+ I already get each month. I'm not looking forward to the drink again.

  • @lisaren 3 bananas the night before the 3 hour? I feel like that would make the results worse. Well my provider didn't tell me anything, bananas or otherwise. I just have in my head I'm going to eat like a champ in the days between now and my test to get out the bad vibes. :)

@smboswell1 Eating junk may not have any effect on you. As far as I understand, a bigger risk factor is having a family history of diabetes, and then it's possible that really overdoing it with bad food would up your chances. As I just learned, literally today when I told my mom about by test result, I in fact do have a family history of diabetes. Had I known, I may not have been so generous with the ice cream so far this pregnancy.

I was scheduled for my 1 hour today and was told it should be done between 24-28 weeks.

I was also told to eat my meals and snacks as normal.
  • It increases potassium.

  • If your pancreas is doing what it is supposed to be doing, what you eat shouldn't matter.  Personally, I'd eat as normally as possible so as not to skew the results.

  • @carcrashheart‌ -I can't do the glucose tolerance test because of the gastrointestinal issues I have, which would likely result in my passing out after drinking the syrup. Instead they're going to give me a glucometer for a week and have me record my blood sugars before and after meals.

Not sure if this is as valid a test for the purpose of assessing gestational diabetes, but maybe mentioning it to your OB could be an option.

    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Also, I absolutely would not skip this test.

  • The orange drink is sitting in my fridge for my 1 hour test at my next appointment. My instructions were to not eat anything for two hours before drinking the drink.

  • I'm definitely looking into this jelly bean alternative. Maybe I can talk them into letting me eat 12 gummy peach rings instead. I mean...they are similar to jelly beans.

This. i never had any risk factors either and ended up having to test my blood after every meal and taking medication and my baby still ended up in the nicu with issues.
