Formula Feeding

Too much weight gain?

DS is 3.5 months and drinks about 35oz formula each day. At birth he was 7lb 10oz and is now 17 lbs based on my scale (weighing myself and then holding him). I plan to discuss with Ped at 4 mo appt, but should I be concerned about his rapid weight gain? I don't want to be over feeding him of course. Please don't flame me for this..I just want honest input and am just concerned for my LO. Which of course may be unwarranted but looking for feedback. He was EBF for 4 weeks and then transitioned to all formula since. Thanks

Re: Too much weight gain?

  • Definitely talk to your pedi about your concerns. All babies are different and some gain more weight and some less.

I admit I'm sometimes concerned about overfeeding my LO too. Although I'd never force a bottle on her, and I try to do paced feeding, she still doesn't give very strong "I'm full" cues and will always open her mouth for a bottle. I mainly have to go by how enthusiastically she is sucking (she'll tend to make the little fluttery "comfort sucks" as she gets full) and then see if she seems content after burping.

I did talk to the doc about feeding at a previous appointment, and his general feeling was that it's pretty difficult to overfeed a baby, since they'll tend to spit up the extra. In the grand scheme of things, the bigger risk is underfeeding, since that can hinder their development.

  • Thanks ladies. I think I am just paranoid and tend to over analyze everything :-)
  • Do you use powder formula? I'm curious if the 35 oz. you are referencing is the volume before or after the powder is added or if it is ready-to-feed. When I reference to the doctor how much he is eating, I'll usually say I make whatever the amount of water that I put in my pitcher. So if I add 24 oz of water and the powder raises the volume to 30 ozs, I tell the pediatrician he's eating 24 ozs. a day. When you use ready-to-feed, you don't have this issue.

Yes, I go by the water...so it's 7 5oz bottles per 24 hours. He eats a ton. I'm semi-concerned that his night wakings are due to another reason other than hunger but of course he won't refuse the bottle. I mentioned this on another board and got flamed to just "feed my kid". He goes to sleep at 7PM, we dreamfeed at 10 and then he's up again between 2-3 for another bottle.
