pain under right breast

So I have had pain on and off under my right breast for the last couple of weeks. I thought maybe I had pulled something and just tried to take it easy.  I finally looked it up today on the internet which I was trying to avoid because I'm the type that looks at webmd symptom checker and think I have the worst possible thing.  According to most websites I saw though, it seems fairly common.  There were a few things about possible gall bladder and/or liver problems.  I have debated almost daily about calling the doctor.  It comes and goes so I always think to just wait it out.  Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: pain under right breast

  • No experience but I would just call your dr for your own peace of mind.

  • This is something that I would definitely call my doctor about right away. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I hope you feel better.

  • I'd say there is a good chance it's your gallbladder. Unless the pain gets unbearable, I would just wait until your next appointment. They can't do anything for it. Mine bothered me when I was pregnant with my first and now again. Just try to stay away from greasy foods.

  • I have had discomfort on and off, but it is under my left breast/close to my sternum.  I discussed it with my doctor last week, and he said that it is common.  People's bodies react to carrying their baby in different ways.  He just said to take Tylenol as needed but didn't seem to think it was any big deal. Hope your doctor says the same thing!

  • Definitely call your doctor. "Upper right quadrant" pain can be an early indicator of preeclampsia, so I've been told by my OB that if I experience pain there, to call and come in just to be safe.

Could be something entirely harmless, but it's so worth getting checked out. FX that it's nothing and you feel better soon!

  • Yes. I have had right upper abdominal pain since 13 weeks under my right breast-made worse when eating, lasting up to 3 hours at a time and radiating into my shoulderblade. In the beginning my Ob said it was normal growing pains. However it was not getting better and actually getting worse. Unfortunately being preggo I was limited to an ultrasound and labs only. Ultrasound result was normal and my labs were normal. However it doesn't rule out gallbladder dysfunction. I really need a hyda scan but it requires radioactive iodine. My primary and OB agree that there is probably gallbladder issues but unless I get worse or it'll have to wait until after baby comes. Now that's not to say your situation is the same- you could have something GI going on, it could be your organs stretching and making room/rib pain, gallbladder, fatty liver, etx. Bring it up at your next appointment or call. Better to be safe than sorry!
  • I thought gallbladder by your description, too; however, I had similar symptoms during my first pregnancy that turned out to be just inflamed rib cartilage from the upward pressure of internal organs on my rib cage. They can run a couple of tests to help you track it down. Feel well!

  • I woke up in awful pain yesterday, the same as you are describing and was going to start a thread about it too.

I talked to the OB nurse who was concerned with constipation, gas pains, and possibly a gallbladder issue being the culprit.

Her advice was to 1) be treated like a queen all night. 2) drink lots of water. 3) take 2 Tylenol 4) if it got worse to go to ER 5)call in am and go in if it is still there.

She was very concerned with fetal movement, but little girl has been moving.

    Are you any better today?

  • I've been having pain in my upper right abdominal area for weeks, brought it up with my OB and she thought it must be a gallbladder issue. Ordered blood work and an abdominal ultrasound which both came back clear, which is great but I still don't have an answer as to what it is!  Definitely worth getting checked out, though. I was told that if it were anything that might be harming the baby, it would have come up in the tests, so that does give some peace of mind.

  • I've has this with all three of my pregnancies. My bra irritates it so if I'm home, I never wear one! For me it's some kind of muscle/rib pain from growing babies. It goes away pretty much the second I deliver. But it is so uncomfortable.

I'd still mention it to your doc so they can rule out other issues! GL!

  • Definitely ask your doctor. Chest pain isn't something to mess around with. I get chest pains from heartburn/indigestion on both sides. Like stabbing pain. It can get pretty horrible. I don't know if I could tell you Gall bladder without knowing more than it hurts. I would say it's probably just growing pains like PP's have mentioned! FX everything is ok :-)

  • I called and left a message with the nurse who is supposed to call back before the end of the day.  I'm leaving on Sunday for vacation so I hope I can get in to see the doctor tomorrow before I leave.  Otherwise, I have my next appointment on the 28th so they may just tell me to wait until then.  It's crazy because since I've been up this morning I haven't felt any pain at all.  I've noticed that sometimes it depends on the position that I am sitting too.  I really do think it's just growing pains, but I definitely want to rule out anything more serious.
