spelling of names

DH and I have a girl and boy name picked out. We cannot agree on spelling. I like to spell names a little different and he is more traditional. So please tell me what you think. Both names have nick names. I am listing them as well.

Re: spelling of names

  • Well it only lets you pick one name so you can just leave the other name in the reply box.

I don't know if I can choose two options on the poll, but I prefer Gwyneth and Benjamin. Definitely one "n" for Benjamin.

Definitely definitely spell them properly! Otherwise it looks like a mistake, not to mention what a pain it will be for your child always correcting it ('Yes, that's right, it's spelt wrong...')

I agree- the spellings are too close to be the alternate spellings IMO. It just looks like your finger got stuck on the n key for Ben.

  • I have a relatively normal first name and a hard to spell last name. But people always make mistakes with my first name. I hate having to spell them both every time I have to give my name. Use traditional spelling!!!
  • I agree. One N on both names. No need to have 2 of the same letter in this case.

    Keep it more traditional.

  • I'm a big fan of using established spellings where they exist.

  • Gwyneth and Benjamin. Adding extra letters doesn't add anything to the name except for confusion and a lifetime of "No, it's spelled with TWO N's". They're both great names, just spell them properly, your kids will thank you for it.

  • I'm not a fan of extra consonants or miss placed Y's or any of that jazz. If you're going to name your kid something spell it right.

  • The extra n looks like a mistake, and it will annoy your kid for life. Take it from someone who has a K instead of a C.

  • Traditional spellings, IMO. There is no need for those extra 'n's
    image
  • I would spell it traditionally.... Benjamin and Gwyneth (I really don't like the spelling of the girl name... but auto correct doesn't even know the spelling...I'm really sorry... I'm confused... (I love the name Gwen though)
  • Now I want to know who was pushing for the extra letter spelling

  • So I just wanted to say thank you for your input. Some people think I took your comments harshly. No...I'm a big girl. I asked for an opinion. A later post I made had nothing to do with this.

    It's unanimous!
  • @kaybeeknits The OP. She said that she likes different spellings and her husband prefers traditional.

  • @kilayla13‌ I think you're thinking of the nickname Gwen for Gwendolyn. Gwyneth is spelled correctly.

Thanks for clearing that up for me :) I was really confused... now I feel silly but in the know
    :) lol
  • @literarymuse thank you, and DUH at my lack of reading comprehension lol

I spoke too soon.  Someone just voted for Benn.

Benjamin and Gwyneth for sure, the other spellings look ridiculous and all the extras are not necessary. I do like both names though, I originally had Gwyneth "Winnie" on my list until DH vetoed it :(
  • What about Gwendolyn?

  • As a teacher I can't stand alternative spellings. I spell it wrong or pronounce it wrong and the kid gets offended. I teach in an inner city school and some of the names and spellings would blow peoples minds.
  • You should name/ spell it however you want it's your baby!
  • Spellings with added unnecessary letters just makes your child's name awkward and for a lifetime of bad name jokes.

Side note: I know as a kid I loved going to the Bike License Plate rack or any personalized item shelf and finding my name so traditional spellings may brighten a child's day/week with something that little.

  • I have a differently spelled name and although at times it was annoying. It's fun meeting people with the same name but different spelling. Conversation starter!
I know someone with a Benjammin and we all love it, they are laid back and love bob Marley, his personality really works with the "been jammin"
    It's fun!
  • I say properly. I have a fried who added an extra L to her daughters name and it turned it into a different name entirely, changing Halie to Hallie. Although these names wouldn't make a difference with the extra N it still has a different effect when read. Looks like a typo
