How much did your baby weigh at 20 Week U/S?

Hello fellow expecting mamas,
We had our 20 week ultrasound this week at 20w3d. The tech said that my baby weighed 13 oz., but from what I've read in my two baby books it says babies usually only weigh about 10 oz. at this point. With the baby still so small, a 3 oz. difference seems like a lot to me. Does this mean anything, or indicate that I might be delivering a bigger baby? I'm not too concerned, mostly curious. I know that babies grow at very different rates. My due date has not changed at all; we are still looking at an EDD of 11.28.

  • Mine was today and I was told 15oz and he is in the 53%

  • This is definitely something that you should talk to your doctor about. I personally wouldn't be worried. When I went in for my A/S last Friday at 22 weeks the doctor told me that the baby was 1 lb 1 oz and that's 66th percentile... Give your doctor a call to discuss it... I'm sure he/she will tell you not to worry.

  • If you go back a few pages (pg 9 on my mobile app) there are like 70 responses to this exact question. There were babies ranging all the way to 18 oz. at the a/s. So that may give you some reassurance, but always talk to the doc if you're worried.

I was told mine was 1 lb at 20w4d. I also thought that seemed like a big difference. They told me I was measuring right where I should be though so I figure it's fine.

This. When I went in for my a/s I didn't get an exact weight but I was told about 12oz is the norm. Everyone is different as you've said. If my OB wasn't worried about it I personally would not be concerned. But you should call if it gives you some peace of mind.

  • Thanks everyone. I already feel much better about this! It's nice to know there is such a range and that babies don't necessarily fit any patterns. Also, sorry for the repeat question- I just joined last week and so I think I definitely missed the initial thread. :( I will go back and read it. Thanks to all who answered.

I believe 10oz is the lower end of the spectrum. There was a thread about this subject not too long ago, and it seemed most babies were around 11oz-13oz.

I wouldn't worry at all. Every baby is different. They all have growth spurts at different times.

  • Mine was 1 pound and 15 oz.... I'm only worried because I'm so small! The doctors didn't seem too concerned. They thought it was funny he was so big.

No worries. That was just for your information to make you feel better, not to be snarky or condescending at all!

  • My scan was at 18 wks..baby was 9 oz....I don't think it's any indication as like you said, they all grow at different rates.  My kids were all good sized...7.10, 8.10 & 9 lbs.  I know I have big babies, lol.

  • Ours were both 11 oz. measurements aren't all that exact. I wouldn't worry.

  • I would not worry about this at all. It is definitely not an exact science & I'd say that difference is within the margin of error. I was 20w6d & she measured 14 oz.

  • I didn't realize everyone was told the weight. The tech didn't mention anything about it and didn't advise how she was measuring growth wise. Not worried about though.

  • I don't think they are very accurate.  At 18 weeks I had an u/s that said they were measuring at 8 oz.  According to what I was reading they shouldn't have been that book, but the doctor said they were measuring exactly right.  I had another u/s yesterday at 23 weeks and they were measuring 1lb 4 oz. and exactly 23 weeks.  What I read said at 23 weeks they should be just under a pound.

  • My tech told me that they could be up to 6 oz off (either direction) at this point. She weighed in at 1lb 6 oz which was ultimately 1w3d ahead.

  • 1 was 15oz the other was 18oz. They told me not to worry about the difference
  • she was 12 oz. at 20 weeks.

i was told the average is below one pound (16 oz). though with any average, there are outliers. see above.
    BABY GIRL, 11-11-14

  • Mine was 14oz at 21 weeks.
  • My little boy was 11oz. I know someone who's baby was 9oz. Sounds like 13 is pretty normal
