Well, let's just say this birth didn't go the way we had planned it. Warning, it's a long read.
On Thursday, a day before my due date, I went in to the office at 8 a.m. for a scheduled non-stress test, a biophysical profile, bloodwork and an OB appointment.
The midwife looked at the results and conferred with the OB, then said they were still concerned about my pregnancy hypertension and swelling and "there's no glory in keeping baby in since your due date is tomorrow." So she sent me to L&D to get things started.
Long story short, they started the induction with cytotec at 1 p.m. Thursday, continued that afternoon with a Foley bulb and followed that Friday morning with Pitocin. My water broke at 10 a.m. Friday, but 30 hours after they started the induction, I still hadn't dilated past a 3. The OB came in and said they recommended an emergency c section because they remained worried about my blood pressure/swelling.
I was very scared but after talking with DH, my mom and my MIL who were there and an awesome nurse we had who offered to stay past her shift and help me through the c section, we went for it.
Oliver was born at 8:06 p.m. Friday, 32 hours after we had first been admitted to L&D. He was 9 pounds, .04 ounces, 20.5 inches long with a head that measured 14 centimeters. As the awesome nurse put it after they pulled him out, "There ain't no way that would have happened (vaginally)."
I cried through the procedure and threw up a few times, and had a rough recovery. I was shaking from the meds and hormones for about an hour after Oliver was born. It was also difficult not to be able to use my arms to hold him for a while.
We ended up staying at the hospital until Tuesday, for a total of 6 days. Oliver had high bilirubin levels and we had latching issues, plus they wanted to keep an eye on my blood pressure.
I will say, despite the little sleep I've gotten, it feels fabulous to be home and DH and I have loved getting to know him. My mom is here helping us out and she has been a lifesaver, especially as I'm still sore from the c section.
Now, if you've gotten through all of that, here are a few pics of my little man!
Re: Oliver's long birth story (NugsMom)
They ended up putting me on a blood pressure medicine, too. I have a checkup next week so we'll see what it is then. I'm also still so swollen (feet and legs) and I'm looking forward to that coming down.
