Free Pump!

Did you know most insurance companies now pay for breast pumps? As a FTM I had no idea! I just called my insurance and ordered an Ameda Double Electric Pump for FREE along with 150 bags every 90 days! They said I'll have it within 14 days. AND I can have a new one every year if I choose to bf longer! I am so excited over this haha. Thought I'd pass this along in case there were others that didn't know like me! Little things excite me

Re: Free Pump!

  • I've heard this too, did they have a variety of choices? How early can you order it? I'm 16 weeks :-)

  • I asked my insurance company and they sent me a list of retailers who would send me the pump. I chose one (online) and they gave me a choice of about five. I picked the Medela Pump In Style Advanced. It was easy to order, I just filled out my insurance info and they ship it for free. The only thing about ordering through insurance is mine didn't come with the carrier bag that they typically come with if you buy it in store. I am going to order a cute one on etsy.

  • The only choice I had was manual or double electric, but that's just my specific insurance. I'm 17 weeks tomorrow and all they asked me was if I was pregnant or currently bf. That was it. But, like I said, that's just my insurance. All I did was call my customer service and they pointed me in the right direction :)

  • Awesome!! Thank you!
  • Thank you for that info I was wondering what to do!

Breast feeding support is part of women's preventative care under ACA. You should also have coverage to see a lactation consultant if you want/need to. Took effect for most 1/1/2013.

My ins has a partnership with target. I can grab any pump off the shelf and bring it to the pharmacy with my ins card.

Eta- I do also need a prescription from my dr

This. all insurances now must cover a breast pump :)

Nope.  My insurance (which has other wise extremely good coverage) does not cover any pump at all  :(

It says there are a few grandfathered plans but in general must cover a breast pump either rented or new.

Yep but unfortunately most =/= all.  I was under the impression that all insurance companies must cover a breast pump until I called mine a few weeks ago and I was shocked.  So just throwing it out there-- so it's not safe to assume one will be covered.

Good to know. Mine will only cover with a prescription which I easy to get. Any way around it? Bummer yours isn't covered!
  • Wow, thanks for the info. I had no idea.

Very important to check with your ins. I think most plans need to have coverage for some type of pump. My previous ins only covered a manual pump.

  • That's a good deal! I bought mine last year with left over FSA funds. I figured it would was a good use of money at the time. Should have waited for the free one though! Maybe I can get a back up? I'm going to check with my insurance co. Thanks for the info!

It is a bummer... and I'm a little bitter about it haha. Since my insurance is other wise great I'm trying to get over it. But maybe I'll call one more time and ask about the prescription thing-- Thank you for the suggestion!

Also keep in mind that MOST women will not need a pump the first few weeks. It's recommended that you not pump until around 6 weeks, any earlier and you risk creating an over supply which is an absolute bitch to deal with.

This is, of course, barring any complications such as a preemie, a baby who won't latch, a mother who chooses to bottle feed breastmilk as opposed to direct nursing, etc.
I don't want to bf, but was thinking of giving pumping and bottle feeding a try, I won't be able to pump for 6 weeks?
@Slaps if you're going to EP that would be a different case. It's just for those who are going to BF you don't want to pump too early because it can cause an oversupply.

  • Awesome! Thanks for the head up! I just called my insurance and they will cover up to $500 without pre-authorization. Now I just hope they have one I will like.

I got mine free when I had my daughter, but my pediatrician had to write a prescription for it. Maybe check into that if your insurance says no.

I just found this out as well! I was thinking about buying a used pump when I stumbled across this information. I had to call my insurance company and they verified it as well! Yay to free stuff!!!
  • Called mine and they said I can't get mine until after I deliver :(

It sucks :( I read somewhere that as of October 1 (the new fiscal year) Tricare was going to start covering them, but now I can't find that article at all. I hope that maybe that wasn't just a rumor and is real, but I'm not holding my breath.

  • My insurance is making me wait until I'm 7months along to order my pump. Don't know what kind I'll be able to get yet.
  • Sorry if this is already mentioned in this thread, but if you go the the website yummymummy you can select your insurance, the pump you want, and it will tell you the cost. You can also order right away, but they do verify with your dr. Ordered mine already and it was free!! Whoo.
  • Yeah, we're not covered under Tricare.  :(( But, I am buying mine tomorrow.  :)

  • @lionyloo32‌ where can the link be found on that website? I looked around and didn't see anything
  • Sorry @LSauer21 here is the link. You go under insurance orders, select your insurance to start and go from there.

  • Just ordered a Medela Pump in-style advanced through yummymummystore.com... Super easy and fast. They'll have to verify my ins and stuff, so we'll see!
