DS got bad news at eye dr today

DS has been having headaches sporadically for about a year now, so at my mother's advice, I had MIL take him to the eye doctor today while DH and I were at work. I thought that maybe he needed glasses or something.

As it turns out, he doesn't appear to be able to see out of his right eye at all.

He had a cyst come up on his upper lid at about 10mo, and when it never went away, I mentioned it at a pedi appt. I wasn't all too concerned about it because it didnt appear painful or to be causing problems. So we agreed not to do anything about it at the time. Pedi said to keep an eye on it and if it became painful or interfered with his blinking or vision to revisit the issue again.

DS is only 4.5, and I never thought about taking him to the eye doctor until he vot his screening during his first year of school (he starts pre-k at the elementary school this year). Like I said, I sent him to the eye doctor today because of headaches.

Well, apparently, at some point in time that cyst was big on thebinside of his eye lid and caused damage (a dent...?) to his cornea. Today it appeared he couldn't see at all out of that eye. So H and I have to go together with DS on Friday to determine the acuity of that eye. As of now, they are saying he will need surgery and to wear an eye patch over the good eye to strengthen the bad eye.

H is mad at our pedi, saying she should have known and insisted that we follow up with an eye dr about the cyst. But I'm mad at myself for not being more concerned about it. I dont think it is anyone's fault, really. I told DH that we just need to wait and see what they say on Friday. I told him it could be worse. He doesn't have cancer, and this is able to be corrected. So I think that's something to be thankful for.

  • Oh my goodness that is terrible news for such a little guy. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers that they can correct what has happened.
You are a good mom and we can't think of everything. You sent him to the dr today and did what you needed to do and can now make arrangements for anything else that needs to be done to help him. That's what a good mom does.

Please don't blame yourself. You are a fantastic mom, and you were following the advice of your doctor. Hindsight is 20/20. Now that you know there is a problem you have a plan and you are going to take care of it. Don't be hard on yourself - what would you tell a friend in your shoes?
  • Oh honey.  Listen, this is not your fault.  YOU did not go to Medical School.

But yes, there is some fault to be laid at the feet of your pediatricians.  THEY should have followed through over the last 4 years.

I would get a second opinion.  And I would ask the specialist if this is something that should have been caught at your son's annual visits, given it was in his Chart to be monitored.  And while I am NOT one that believes that people should immediately jump to a lawsuit, if there is true medical negligence that will affect your son for the rest of his life, then you need to look into that.

I am going to pray for you guys very hard.

  • Thinking of you and praying for you that all works out. SS had to wear an eye patch to correct his vision and it's worked.

  • ((HUGS)) to you and your DS!  So sorry you are going through this, but happy it is something treatable!

I have vision in one eye that is way better in the other (no medical reason, just one eye is 20/30 and the other is 20/200).  It does impact my depth perception (I score very low on depth perception tests), although I don't notice it at all day-to-day.
  • I'll be praying for your little guy. I hope it turns out to be ok. And yes I agree with @Ilumine too. I don't believe in lawsuits for no reason, but if this is something that will require lots of expensive medical treatment I believe your pediatrician should've suggested a follow-up a long time ago and should be held responsible.

  • Thanks for all the support, guys. And thank you, Illumine, for putting that aspect into perspective.

DS has always been clumsy. But so am I.I never thought much about it. He does walk into walls and door faces just about every day. But so do I. He can throw a baseball and football like nobody's business, so I never really thought a whole lot about him actually having vision problems. And I swear he can spot little things driving down the road that none if us ever would have noticed.
  • Thoughts and prayers to and for you guys.  My DS has a host of eye problems and we were told that we had to see specialist, wear patches, get glasses among other measures to correct his vision.  As part of a NIH study we met with a Pediatric Ophthalmologist who discovered that he could see better than he should.

I felt like a failure because I didn't know my kid couldn't see because he did everything like everyone else.  He though that everyone saw the way he does so he didn't know to tell me something wasn't ok.

The eye exam is created for adults and modified for children so some times they give incorrect readings.  I am hoping that is the case for your DS.  Please remember to stay as calm as you can and treat whatever his diagnosis is like it is as normal as loosing teeth to keep your DS calm and confident about it.

  • Thank you, acbarbour
  • Don't beat yourself up!!! You aren't a doctor, you do the best you can with what you know, and you didn't know there was an issue. My sd has 70/20 vision in her left eye and we had no idea about a seeing issue until the 3rd grade teacher mentioned something about her eyesight. Sure I felt like a failure, and that we should have caught on a lot sooner, but in the end she has glasses and now we take care of her eyes.
