I was reading and one suggestion was about using some type of protection on your mattress in case your water breaks at night. Has anyone done this and if so when and what did you use?
A doctor had to break my water at the hospital with DS (I ended up being induced). My BFF's water broke early in the morning when she was still in bed. She said that it just got a little bit on the bed and didn't really gush until she stood up and was in the bathroom. I wouldn't worry too much about a big gush ruining your bed/mattress. Also, I think it's only about 10% of people's water breaks early in labor. A lot of people have to have theirs broken later.

I didn't even think of this! I have regular puppy pads for our small dog so I may just line them up on my side of the bed next time I change the sheets. I guess any protection would help. Also I would love a new mattress so I wouldn't be heartbroken if we had to replace it.
We already have a waterproof mattress pad over our mattress. We got it when we bought our bedroom set and new mattress and our 1st dog was still in the puppy stage, sleeping with us and while it was rare, we didn't want her to ruin the mattress. She has not peed in the bed since we got it, but I still leave it on - because ya never know.
We JUST bought a new mattress, when we bought it I also bought one of the water proof covers too because I would be super sad if I ruined it! I also may lay a towel or 2 down on my side towards the end just in case. Last time the OB broke my water at the hospital, but there was soooo much that I definitely don't want to ruin our mattress if it happens at home this time!
It's some sort of plasticky material but we bought an allergen/ waterproof fitted sheet that we put under our quilted mattress pad with the first kid. From bed bath beyond...maybe $20. My water did break in bed while I was sleeping with baby # 2 so that was good.
But I'll tell you what, that thing saved us so many times because of baby barf (both kids were barfers/spit up a lot) while nursing and a few soaked diapers/blowouts. So worth buying vs. piddle pad method. We usually start using it around 36 weeks and take off when baby moves out of our room.

I went to Walmart and paid 5.98 for 2 queen size plastic matress covers. I was worried I would hear the plastic crinkling under me but so far it's been fine. I'm alittle ahead of the game bc dr thinks these boys could come at any time
The woman who sold us our new mattress last month talked us into buying a waterproof mattress protector. It looks a lot like a regular mattress pad, but with plastic-y material on the inner layer. It was probably overpriced ($50), but the thought of ruining our new, ridiculously expensive mattress made us go for it. Of course, now this thread makes me think of it as a giant human wee wee pad!
I bought a small little waterproof pad that's about 3x3 feet and already put it on my side of the bed. I didn't want to get a full mattress one cuz I'm a cheapo -- plus I figure that I can just put it under the crib sheet later for the baby. I hope that it's going to be big enough if my water breaks in bed and that I'm not lying on my husband's side of the bed...
My water did break while I was in bed, with DD2 shortly after I had gone down for the night. At 38 weeks I had put down 2 old towels under the sheet on my side of the bed. And that was more than plenty. While I was laying down horizontally in the bed I felt a pop and then a very small amount of fluid. It wasn't until I stood up and went to the bathroom that a good quantity gushed out. So taking precautions is definitely a smart idea but I also wouldn't worry about it too much either.
We got a waterproof mattress pad to just go on my side of the bed before DS1 was born that is about crib size. Think we got it from target for $15. I like it since you can use it in pack in play, crib, etc are baby arrives.
When I was near the end of my pregnancy, I swore every time I got out of bed at night that I'd stand up and my water would break! If it does break on its own (which happens less often than you think) it will probably be a slow trickle and not a huge gush... and if it does "gush", it most likely won't be until your up, not lying down. I wouldn't worry too much. I'd worry more about protecting the seat of your car on the way to the hospital.

I swear by Amazon's ratings system - it has yet to disappoint me, so I'm hoping this product will be successful as well!
