Should I wake LO to feed so he'll sleep later?

My 8 week old just STTN for the first time the night before last and he did again last night (yay!!!), but I had put him down a little earlier than usual so I went to bed 1-2 hours later. He slept about 8 hours but woke up crying at 4am and wouldn't go back to sleep after a few minutes, so I guess I'm up for the day!
So my question is, should I wake him up to eat again right before I go to bed? It seems like sacrilege to wake a sleeping baby to me lol but does this method work for you?

  • At night, no, I wouldn't wake her up. I'd maybe just start the whole routine earlier. For babies, early to bed means later to rise and vice versa. Sleep begets sleep.

  • Wish my little one was sleeping so well! I am happy with how he is sleeping at 6weeks old. He gets up once or twice to eat, but he doesn't go to bed that early. I need to work in this!
  • Brooke gets her last bottle between 1030-1130 and is asleep by midnight and wakes up around 630 and goes back to sleep for a few more hours. The last two days she slept after 7 and went back to sleep for another hour- hour and half after eating. She'll be 11 wks tomorrow.

This is us too. She usually falls asleep on me after eating around 8/9 and gets up somewhere between 10/11 for a diaper change and a bottle from daddy. Sleeps till about 5ish and then will go right back down for a good 3/4 hours. Her morning nap usually starts about an hour after she's "up" for the day. She's 10 weeks and 12lbs
  • I agree with the other ladies. Listen to what your LO is wanting and follow that. I tried to keep DS up later hoping that he would sleep later and I also tried waking him up to feed at my bedtime to get him to STTN. Both backfired and he woke several times. Now I listen to when he wants to sleep (usually between 8-9) and put him down for the night. He sleeps until about 4 and feeds and then sleeps until about 7:30 or so. I go to bed at 11 so I still get about 7 hours total which feels amazing at this point. :)
  • I agree with pp. no matter what time she goes down she's up between 5 and 6. Last night she went down at 7:30 and was fussing a little at 4 so I picked her up to feed her and oh my! She was not awake and didn't like it! She then stirred for an hour after so I was up anyway and it interrupted her sleep. I couldn't believe she slept that long though. I thought for sure she'd wake up one last time after going down at 7:30.

DS goes down around 7:30. Sometimes he wakes up on his own around 10 but if he doesn't, we wake him up to eat and change his diaper, put him down around 11-11:30. He wakes up around 3 or 4, down again from 4 or 5 to 7:30ish. We tried letting him sleep thru but then he just wakes up around 1 and again at 5 so this works better for us.

  • Our pediatrician told us never wake a sleeping healthy weigh baby. DS has been sleeping 6 hours then wakes to eat and sleeps another 3 hours and sometimes will go back to sleep after that. I'm hoping I can get him for longer stretches of sleep. Although I can't complain about his sleep habits now.
  • Yep that's us! LO goes down after his bath about 715 til about 845 in his swing then I take him to bed change his diaper feed him and put him in his PNP and he sleeps til about 4. Then he will get up eat diaper change and down until 630-7. If I didn't wake him and change and feed him he would be up at 2-3. So I would say yes if you think LO will sleep longer..
