XP: Urine vs. Fluid: What am I leaking?

How do you know if you are leaking fluid or if you are leaking urine?

I've had leakage on/off all day especially after getting some boots to the pelvis by the baby. I feel like some is coming out even if I clench really tightly and I think it's worse when I'm sitting down. Any ideas? My 4 year old is asleep so if I'm just peeing myself I don't want to wake him up and schlep him out.

TIA!

Re: XP: Urine vs. Fluid: What am I leaking?

  • This is gross but what color is it?

Discharge seems to be more watery and not clear

Pee seems to be more clear

Amniotic fluid is usually very liquid with zero viscosity

Call your doctor though and they can help you figure it out.

Only your OB can answer this question for you with certainty, and if you are concerned you should give them a call. I called my MFM Monday evening about increased liquid discharge with movement and he had very specific instructions, which included a trip to L&D for an exam, cervical check and u/s to check fluid levels. I'm not inferring you should go to L&D, but only your OB can give you a direct answer post exam. An internet message board cannot tell you what you are excreting.

  • My Dr didn't help me when I went to him. I had him check at my last visit. I now have this lovely itching that won't go away and he said that it likely won't go away until after the pregnancy. I highly recommend applying a hydrocortozone cream and or vaseline to the hood area as a preventative measure. This itching is no bueno.

To answer your question though, it is likely urine. It happens to me even when I don't have to pee, which is so not cool.

Also, I love your screen name.

  • Thanks; I know the internet can't tell me which it is but any clues that lean one way or the other is helpful. There isn't really any colour I don't think? I might dig around to see if I have any pads and see if I can tell if anything collects there.

You can tell by smell. Urine will smell and discharge/amniotic fluid wont.

Thats the advice the nurses gave me when I thought my water was leaking. Last pregnancy around 38 and 39 weeks, I leaked something very watery after sex. I called L&D thinking my water had broken, they asked if it had a smell and that if it didnt and I was soaking through a maxi pad under an hour, that I should come in.

It didnt have a smell but it stopped. However later at my 40 week appointment it turned out that there must have been a very tiny hole in the top of my amniotic sac because I had been leaking fluid just very slowly and only very tiny amounts at a time.

  • I've got a pad in and I'll see what happens. Sometimes it smells a bit amonia-y but others it doesn't. Thanks for all advice and I especially appreciate it since I haven't been around here much.

  • Yeah, I haven't seen you around in ages. If it wasn't for the gif, I'd probably not have remembered you. So now that means you can't change it :D

  • This weekend I woke up with about a teaspoon's worth of wetness on my underwear. I didn't think much of it, but then as the day went on I seemed to continue to have a lot more discharge/wetness than normal. It wasn't like my CM has been, otherwise I wouldn't have cared. It was liquid and didn't smell like urine. I called the triage nurse just to be safe, and she sent me to L&D triage. Of course it wasn't fluid.. but I feel in that situation it's always better to know for sure.

All of that to say I'd call, and go in just in case.
