Pregnant after a Loss

Short Cervix Ladies Come In

At my first cervical length screening on Friday, my MFM said I have a borderline short cervix and currently am presenting with placenta previa.  No big surprise on either count since I've had surgery on both my cervix and uterus.

Just wondering on everyone's collective experiences, for those of you who have been/are in the same boat.  I think I am on my road to a cerclage at best and bed rest at worst, but am interested to hear IRL experiences.

Thanks in advance. Cupcakes for all.  :)

Re: Short Cervix Ladies Come In

  • I don't have "short cervix" exactly, but I have a really fabulous anomaly called a didelphic uterus, which means my uterus has a wall down the center of it, and my cervix is split in 2. We were worried that I may have to do both of the above mentioned things, and in the end I went full term with my son without any issue. We just watched it closely through the weeks.
Fingers crossed maybe you'll get lucky!

  • Thanks.  I was born with a completely septated uterus and two cervixes.  They were surgically repaired so I now have a unified uterus and only one cervix - thus the issue with the cervical competency.

FX I will be lucky, like you said.  I just really doubt it since I'm already "borderline short" at 16w.

  • not sure if my input will mean anything but when i was having my Cerclage placed i was told after that i have a VERY short cervix and the Dr had to pull my cervix a little just to get the stitch in. my cerclage was removed last week (37 weeks) and no sign of baby yet!
  • @patch89 - did you have to go on bed rest or other lifestyle modifications as a result of the cerclage?  That's great news that it was removed and all is well.

  • @ToriGirl2014 i was put on bed rest for a few weeks and had to take time off work due to bleeding and cramping. no intimacy with the husband waaaaah lol and no lifting heavy objects.
  • I had incompetent cervix with DD, the cerclage and the whole 9 yards. She was born at 38w2d and at that time my cervix was fairly long, thick and closed. Conclusion my cervix is a jerk. :)

  • @chicagojackie - when you say the whole nine yards, are you talking bed rest as well?  I'm trying to get an idea of how likely it is, if I end up with a cerclage, that I can continue to work in either my full time or a limited capacity.

  • and oh @ToriGirl2014 I was off work for 1 week after my cerclage . When i went back to work, at the end of the first day i felt a bit funny? They did my bp ( i work in a hospital ) and it was sky high! I started puking and cramping within the hour. Conclusion was to take more time off work. i did that. same thing happened when i went back to work so had to take some sick leave. The consultant said its probably the pressure i was feeling in my cervix and the type of job i have (not being a relaxed one and on my feet all day) so yea, just thought i would let you know. Not trying to scare you or anyone!!
  • Hey @tonigirl2014 I was supposed to do bedrest but I could not because of my work situation. I took breaks every hour though and put feet up when sitting. I did go on bedrest at 37w3d though trying to get to >38w.
