Possible low amniotic fluid??

So I went in for an elective 3/D 4/D ultrasound yesterday...fast forward to this morning when my doctors office called to tell me that they recd a report from Goldenview ultrasound saying my amniotic fluid is low. I now have to go for another ultrasound at the hospital this afternoon to see what's going on. They said sometimes one place might think it's low when they don't but who knows. I'm starting to freak out a bit. I'm 29 weeks and don't really know what it may mean if my fluid is low. Does anyone have experience or knowledge about this????

Re: Possible low amniotic fluid??

  • I was worried about low AF last week at my apt since it seems like I am struggling to stay super hydrated. Although my level was fine, my OB told me that the amount of fluids you drink has very-very little impact on the level of AF. I would do your best to stay calm until after your US and then see what your doctor's says.

the bolded makes no sense. if you are dehydrated or not drinking enough water, the amnio fluids will most certainly change and if you're constantly dehydrated I would bet that the levels are low... Granted there may be other reasons contributing to lower or higher levels, but once you know they're low, one of the best solutions is making sure you are properly hydrated. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22298867 https://www.livestrong.com/article/505961-the-effects-of-dehydration-in-pregnant-women-on-the-baby/

Wrong. For women with LOW LEVELS, your hydration absolutely matters (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1945215) Hey @MMason12‌ If your levels were fine, I'd say your OB's suggestion has very little relevance here, wouldn't you??

It's alright, Carm. She just wanted to make sure that OP knew that HER levels were fine and then say some bullshit. It's her MO today.

  • Like others said, try to not freak out. Wait until an actual trained personal checks things out. Hydration is key.

  • Babies go through periods where they swallow the amniotic fluid and then "pee" it back out. You might have had your ultrasound during a swallowing phase. This happened to me last pregnancy and the next ultrasound showed I had plenty of fluid.

  • Thanks everyone..I just went for my ultrasound and the tech said she checked 4 times and everything looked ok. The only issue is he's weighing 3.9 lbs at 29 wks and 1 day. The tech said that's pretty big for 29 wks and the baby should be gaining 1/2 -1 lb a wk till he's born. DD was only 6.11 so it looks like he's definately gonna be bigger than that. I'm now scared I'm gonna have a extremely large baby...yikes!!!!!

Ultrasounds could be off a pound or two this late in the game. Try not to freak yourself out :)

  • I was in a car accident around 24 weeks and my fluid dropped to 8 and it's usually high. They suspected z small leak. I drank tons of fluids and it was back on it's way up by my follow up 2 days later. Just hydrate is my advice!
