NBR: Etiquette Question

So I was just at the bank and while I was at the customer service counter a older (60ish) woman came up and stood at the counter too.  I had to bite my tongue but I wanted to ask her if she could move back because I was handling private business and she didn't need to stand there and listen in.  I did not say anything but would I have been wrong to please ask her to step back so I could conduct my business a bit more privately?

Re: NBR: Etiquette Question

  • Was it a private station with one on one service or a more "open" station with more tellers available? She may not have realized what she was doing. This is the kind of thing my FIL would do. Either way, if she was really up on you I wouldn't think it wrong to nicely tell her you'd like your conversation to remain private with the teller.

  • I don't think you would have been wrong to say anything. I also think the teller helping you should have said something for you, though.

@ skeemer it was actually the customer service counter and not a teller window, but she stood right up at the counter next to me.

Edit: there was only one rep at the counter.
  • I work retail, but we handle money services (check cashing, money transfers, etc.)...and I've asked customers to step back while I assist the current customer in conducting his or her business. I don't think you or the teller would have been out of line in asking her to step back a little.

  • You would have been right to ask her to step back. At my work, we sometimes handle sensitive situations with accounts. People often till try to cut around others, so we're constantly having to ask people to step back and respect others' privacy.

  • Thanks everyone for your input. I was worried I was letting some thing small get to me. I think it was best today for me not to say anything, but if it happens again I'll try the " nice nasty" skeemer mentioned.

I've asked people to give me some room at store checkout registers before. It's amazing how not awkward people feel when they're practically breathing on your neck!

    Yes!

A coworker got so close to me at work once. He was towering over me while I was sitting behind my desk in my chair. I said, "Listen, if I can stretch my arm out & touch you...you are TOO CLOSE." The same guy once tried to squeeze past me while I was standing in a doorway 7 months pregnant. I said, "Dude, I cannot suck my stomach in any more than this. Just say excuse me & I'll move."

    What the heck?!
