Baby Clothes

How many outfits for each size are you guys buying? With my son, I got tons and tons of barely used hand-me-downs, so I didn't really have to buy much of anything for a long time. This time, I don't know anyone with a girl so we will be buying all her clothes ourselves. I am totally lost on how many outfits for each size we will need, since the sizes are way off!! What are you guys doing?

Re: Baby Clothes

  • I'm trying to just buy stuff that I can mix and match. I have a new found love for Target's clearance rack. I got some cute little pants for like $3 for 2 pairs. That plus a onesie and baby is good to go. I have bought a lot of those sleep n play things, but I'm trying to not buy too many as I imagine folks will give some at my shower and once the grandmas know what sex this baby is, they will go crazy and buy all the things! So I'd say I've gotten maybe 3-4 of the sleep in plays in each size and so far 2-4 pairs of pants and maybe 6 onesies in each size? I have more onesies on my registry though.

DS had reflux pretty bad so we went through like 5 sleepers a day and plenty of onsies. I have about 10-15 outfits in each size so that I'm not constantly doing laundry. Like you said, we got many things second hand so that we could afford to have so many, hit up those yard sales while you still can! Edit: words

  • With DD born in March (CO still chilly), I went with a lot of footed sleepers...I'd say we had about 5-10 of these to avoid multiple loads of laundry a week. She practically lived in these the first 4 months of her life, so we did have to replace a few of the worn-out ones. Rarely did we dress her in anything else because of the convenience and she wasn't in daycare. DD was also pretty big, 8#12oz, so we skipped the newborn; went straight to 0-3month/3 month. We also had long and short sleeved onesies (5-10 each), about 5 pairs of pants, and oodles of socks and mittens to avoid scratching. When she was about 9 months, she started daycare and we started dressing her everyday then. Thankfully we had lots of hand-me-downs. Did get a winter coat which she wore once, so I'd avoid that in the future for little ones because it's not like they are really outside playing.

  • I'm not buying a ton as we already have hand me downs from N. I never had a bunch of newborn stuff. I would say for the rest: 6-8 sleepers, 4-6 onsies with little pants, 2-3 cute outfits. That's probably good for each stage.
  • I can't comment on numbers/quantity b/c I honestly don't remember but I will say you can find a ton of NB and 0-3 Mo stuff brand new with the tags still on them and everything at consignment stores and sales. It's hard to buy retail after you've bought a closet full of new or like-new clothes for about a couple dollars per item.

  • As others have said I'm not buying much until after my shower so that I can see what I still need. I've been told that people buy you a lot of the tiny sizes so I haven't really bought much that will fit right away.

I second what @kyliedaniellexx said about shopping at thrift stores. The majority of what I have bought has been from thrift and consignment stores and I'm shocked at the great selection and awesome prices. I've bought a few Gap items for less than $8 each and I've seen the same things online for $30+. I recently bought some unworn shorts with tags on them for $1! I've probably spent about $40 on clothes at second hand stores and I have about 15-18 outfits, which sounds like pretty good value to me.

  • The bump app hates me today :( please forgive me triple posting. So embarrassing!
  • My MIL is a shopaholic so now that we know we are having a boy and need all new clothes (our first is a girl), I know she is going to go crazy. That said, I found having the following for each size was helpful (including newborn size, I have tiny babies!!) 6 pjs/sleep&plays 3-4 outfits (such as a Carter's 3 piece set or jumpsuit) 2 leggings/pants 3-4 bodysuits I will probably buy half of the items above in sizes NB, 3M, and 6M and wait to see what is gifted - the amount of clothes we received after DD arrived was insane!

  • I'm so jealous of you guys with big families! We don't have family that will be buying us much of anything. I'm trying to buy clothes here and there so that we don't have to binge spend on a bunch of clothes later on.

  • I was slightly concerned with @AnnieRoo13 paged me 3 times in a row... yay for not being in trouble <:-P

Baha, I'm sorry! Now I'm just going to page you randomly for the rest of the day to see what kind of trouble I can get you in.
  • I'd stock up on sleep-and-plays for the newborn age. We had too many clothes for DD (we also had an awesome hand-me-down thing going) and many outfits never got touched. But, on a bad day, we could go through... 5 changes? So, I'd figure out how frequently you're going to be doing laundry, then multiply the number of days between washing by 4-5 for newborn, 0-3, and 3-6 clothes. Once you have her, you'll get a better sense of how frequently she's going to need new clothes.
