January 2013 Moms

Talk to me about cloth!

We are expecting #2 (and will be verified on wed, but possibly #3 :-O ) in January. I am also looking into stopping work depending on the situation. If I stay home, we are going to cloth diaper to save money. I have been doing research since Ben was tiny & I think the plan is one size pocket diapers and either prefolds or just disposables until the one sizes fit. I have no clue if my plan even makes sense, or what brand, or what accessories I will need, how many, or anything really to cloth a toddler and fx one little baby. Please help!

  • We use cloth. Bum Genius 4.0 are my favorites but they are a little spendy. Alvas and Kawaii's are cheaper and we use them as well and like them. I do disposables for the newborn stage. It depends on how often you want to wash diapers but I would say you need 30 for 2. I use regular powder detergent so nothing special there. I also don't use a diaper sprayer. You would need a wet bag (I like planet wise) for the diaper bag and either a large one to store dirty diapers in at home or a garbage can and pail liner.

  • Congrats!

Thanks for posting op. We are having twins in December and I keep going back and forth with cloth diapering. There is good information on here that helps.

Good luck! It's definitely overwhelming thinking about bringing home 2 brand new babies when you'll have a 2 year old at home. Our DD will almost be 23 months when I have our babies.

  • Congrats! We cloth and I pink puffy heart it. I actually look forward to the laundry.

We use Charlie Banana one-size pockets but if I had to do it again with unlimited funds, I'd get BumGenius Freetimes because I love the fit and I hate stuffing pockets. ;-)

We use Planetwise hanging wet bags as a "pail", and Gain detergent for the diapers (and everything). It looks like PPs covered what you'll need so I thought I'd tell ya what we do. ;-) Also, I use cloth wipes sometimes but I'm lazy right now, so I'm just using Huggies. They go through the washer and dryer just fine and then I can chuck them.

    Good luck!

I didn't use cloth until DS was 5 months so I don't have experience CDing a newborn. You can save a ton of money using CDs in the newborn stage and the resale value is pretty good. The most popular option is prefolds or fitteds with covers. GMD workhorses get a lot of love on the CD board.
For OS, pockets are a great option. I have a various stash with several brands and styles. Have you considered an AI2 (all in 2) like Flips or Best Bottoms? I love my Best Bottoms and it's all I use on the weekend or when DS isn't in daycare. I'd recommend getting 24 OS diapers for one child - wash every other day. With 2 or 3 in diapers, maybe 40-50? This is where an AI2 could save more money since you reuse the covers and just grab a new insert at each change (until the cover gets poop on it).

For accessories you'll need wetbags or pail liners. I use a trash can and pail liners. A diaper sprayer is nice but I just dunk and swish. If I had more than 1 in cloth I'd get a sprayer. I use Grandma El's diaper cream and Charlie's Soap for laundry.

ETA: I also use cloth wipes. I have a bunch of the cheap baby wash cloths and they work great.

  • Wow @kyleedee08, crazy news! And don't stress, I know a lot of twin mamas with other little ones and they all say you find a way to make it work.

We use cloth--have since about 5 weeks. I don't know a lot about newborn cloth but we use BumGenius 4.0 pocket diapers. I love them. We also have a few Charlie Bananas but not a huge fan of their snaps and the bulkiness. For overnight we use Rumperoozs (the have the gusseted legs like disposables which help for overnight, especially on my chunky legged baby) with hemp inserts.

Honestly, especially if you're going to have twins I recommend not going with pre-folds because that's a lot of work. Pockets require stuffing but that's about it. We use either Rock N Green Soap or Charlie's Soap along with Bac Out for washing and they clean up great. I've been so happy with the quality, especially with the Bum Genius.

We also do cloth wipes because I found that easier than separating out regular wipes and throwing them away. We through it all into a planet wise wet pail liner. I have about 25 diapers total and I do wash about every 3 days. The initial investment is a little pricey (I think I spent around $400 on everything) but once you get your basics you're done buying!

We love cloth. Even my husband who was super against it sings praises of cloth diapering! Saved us tons and it's better for baby. Occassionally she gets a little diaper rash (usually when teething) and I put her in a disposable (usually Honest Company) diaper until it clears and then we go right back to cloth.

Good Luck Mama! And congrats on the baby(ies!)

  • I didn't use cloth when DS was a newborn because i hadn't talked H into it by then, but we switched at about 5 months. I use a combination of pockets, and hybrids, and the great thing about one size pockets is that with some creative snapping they can be used as newborn diapers (i am looking for the diagram i found way back when, soon as i find it i'll post it here). I think though that prefolds are a great option for newborns. They are very affordable, and as an added benefit can be trifolded later and used as inserts in your pockets so they have a lot of staying power. As for accessories i keep it pretty minimal, i have a bin for dirties, and a shelf for clean and folded. I never needed a sprayer because our shower is right next to our toilet, and we have a hose attached to the shower head so that worked just the same, if i had to do it over, i would invest in a spray pal though for sure, it keeps the dirty water from getting everywhere. My stash has about 30 diapers, this is enough for me to wash every other day, 15 or so diapers each wash, and to cycle through my stash in such a way that each diaper gets used on average, about twice a week, this keeps them in better shape, longer i have found. When i first started i had enough for one day, and was washing them every single night, those diapers, now a year old, are on their last legs because i abused them lol. Now for brands, i LOVE my BG 4.0s as far as one size pockets go, they are great quality, adorable, and really worth what you spend on them. My cheaper diapers, don't fit as well, don't absorb as much, leak faster, and are more prone to blow outs, so that is definitely a route i would explore. I have also had luck with Rumparooz, and gosh are they cute, but i don't see a clear advantage over the BGs and they cost a few bucks more a pop, and when you are talking about something you need a couple dozen of, or in the case of twins, 4 or 5 dozen of, those few bucks a piece REALLY add up. That being said on average a family will spend $2,533 a year per child on disposable diapers, my stash cost me about $750 (i have several customs that cost around $40 so that is where much of my cost came in, i fell for the cuteness lol). If we had, had twins, and doubled those figures we would have saved $3,666 in the first year alone. So it's definitely worth the initial investment, even though that sticker shock made me nauseous in the beginning. Taken care of these diapers will last years, and through multiple children, and can then be resold to further recoup costs. Alright, i'll stop talking your ear off now lol. Congratulations on your pregnancy, and potentially your TWINS! How very, very, exciting. If you have any questions about cloth feel free to message me :)

  • I love my BumGenius pockets. DH loves the prefolds. We don't use Snappi's or anything on our prefolds, just fold and snap up the cover. I use disposable wipes.

I wash with Charlie's soap and "line" dry them on a drying rack.

  • We use cloth and love them.  I recommend going to your local baby boutique and taking with the cloth diaper expert on hand.

This is what we use and love:
-Cloth wipes and wipe warmer.  We just use water, no special solution.
-Ubbi diaper pail with cloth diaper liner.
-Thirsties diaper covers, we had 9 size 1 and 7 size 2
-Oso Cozy better fit organic prefolds.  36 size 1 and 36 size 2
-Bum Genius sprayer.  (We didn't get this until we started solids.)

We didn't start cloth until DS was 8 pounds.

    Best of luck!

  • We planned to start DS in cloth, but he was too big to fit into my newborn stash and not yet big enough to fit into my one size pockets.  For my newborn stash, I had 36 prefolds, snappi's, and wool covers I made from sweaters I picked up from Goodwill and thrift stores (there are tons of free patterns out there along with instructions about felting and lanolizing them).  My newborn stash cost me about $50.  I use Kawaii one size pockets now, and DS fit into those at about 6-8 weeks (I forget).  I purchased them during their annual sale (which I believe was in July or August, I remember thinking it was too early to be stocking up for a January baby, but it was such a good deal).  I got 40 diapers for about $200 (yes, really!).  The choice of prints was limited/probably being discontinued, but I don't really do the CD thing for the cuteness factor, although, I can't tell you the number of people who comment on how cute they are when they see DS in just his diaper.  We also use the hanging wet bag from FuzziBuzz, and we haven't had any issues with stink.

I love that I'll only have to carry one type of diaper with me once the new baby is born.  DS seems interested in potty training, but not yet, so I don't expect him to be potty trained before the new baby gets here.  My sister's kids are two years apart, and she talks about how hard it was to remember to pack both sizes of diapers for her girls when she was going out.

not to be a pain, but there is no way this is true.  that would be $211/month, and even if you include wipes, that's way tooo much.  i think $700/year per child is more accurate.  so cloth is still a savings, but just wanted to bring some realizism to the discussion.
