Possibly dumb fever question

We've had a good morning - happy baby, ate formula and oatmeal, and then she started to get tired. She was fighting sleep and getting herself really really worked up. I put her in her car seat in an attempt to get out the door (and hopefully fall asleep on the drive), but she was screaming like a banshee - so I unclipped her to calm her down. She seemed warm, so I took her temp, and it was 99.1. I remember my pedi saying anything below 100.4 is NOT considered a fever. So I tried not to panic, and got her to fall asleep.

I waited about 10 minutes, retook her temp, and it's down to 97.8.

I guess my question is, can babies rile themselves up to be that warm? The temp dropped within 10 minutes. A "real' fever would have persisted, right?

  • Yes, baby crying does elevate temp so that's likely behind the minor blip up.  And not a dumb question.

  • Thank you guys. I took her to daycare and talked to the director - I wanted to be honest first of all, but also get her imput. She said it's totally normal, but you should add a degree when you take the temp via armpit. (Who knew? Lordy.) That would have put her temp at 100.1 and then down to 98.8 ten minutes later.

Anyway, because the temp went down so quickly, she chalked it up to W's temper tantrum. She also said they know she's teething, which can cause low grade fevers. In either case, they're not concerned and gave me the all clear to leave her.

    I'm still worried though. :(

  • @JoyBaby5‌ That always freaks me out! We had a night where one armpit was 99.8 but the other was 97.6. They quickly evened out to 98.
@rosiepeare - and 98 is normal, right? I've even read that 99 can be normal!

I hate how I become consumed with worry about these little things! Maybe one day, this story will go into the "what do you laugh at now" thread! lol. I keep reminding myself the temp jumped down once W had calmed down and fallen asleep. But the completely irrational side of me thinks "BUT OMG SHE HAD A FEVER!!!!!!!!"

  • @Codypup‌ As I understand it, in the armpit, you consider one degree higher (as PP said). I don't *think* I'd be worried at this point unless armpit was 100 or above--unless there were other symptoms (uncontrollable crying, excessive sleeping, change in mood, etc.). The best thing my friends with LOs have said is that I know L, and I'll know when she's sick. And my pedi reminded me that, if there's not a high temp, the best indicator of baby's current health is mood. Sending all the hugs to you and W!
Well according to the armpit temp +1 rule, that would have put her fever at 100.1 at its highest. But then right down to 98.8 ten minutes later.

If her mood is any indication, she's fine - she was smiling and babbling when I left her. I talked to the director, and checked back in W's room, and she was on the floor trying to scoot. So I'd say she's okay?

I love that advice about how I know W, and I'll know if she's sick - she certainly did not seem ill when I left her. DCP agreed (or I wouldn't have left her at all!)

I still might have put a call into the pedi, because worry wort. ;-)

  • I take Ava's temp rectally and her "normal" is around 99 all the time. Every doctor appointment and every time I've taken it that is considered her normal.

Call if it gives you peace of mind. It can't hurt.

  • Babies actually tend to run hotter than adults, so 98-99 is very normal temp. She's fine, if she were sick she'd be acting grumpy :)

  • Pedi called me back and kind of giggled at me, lol. They don't even consider it a fever until 101! But they were kind and reassuring and totally nice. I also called DC to check on W, who is currently napping. She was apparently very chatty this morning after I left. Phew! Thanks guise. Love, Worry-wort-a-codypup
