Fly or drive with lo

For those of you who have traveled a lot with your little ones, do you find it easier to fly or drive?
We just did a 9 hour drive to Canada this past weekend and it didn't go as well as I had thought. Lucas hates being in the car seat. We even tried to leave at night and on the way home drive half way and stop over night. So next month we are taking a vacation to myrtle beach and from where we live it's about a 15 hour ride. I'm debating. If it's worth spending the money to fly down their instead since he doesn't do well in his car seat. He will be 9 months when we travel.
How did your little ones do flying?

  • Wow. FLY. haha. I'm scared to drive 2 hours with N. She hates the carseat. When we flew to Oregon, she did awesome. We live in Florida, so it was a pretty long plane ride.

  • My DH and I flew with H when he was 3 months. He did great!! The flight was about 3 hours and he never made a peep. He actually did better than me. I've flown a ton and its always been no big deal...add in baby and I had complete anxiety. On our flight home we ended up being stuck at the airport and delayed for 5 hours. So my advice is to be as prepared as possible for any situation. After finally boarding the plane, an older lady (probably in her 80's) came up and told me what a great job we did with our LO during the delay. As a FTM I really needed to hear her kind words. So, if I were you I would search out some flights for sure.
  • Our first flight is tomorrow - 4 hrs- and I'm a nervous wreck!!! And I'm also bringing like everything. It's embarrassing.

  • another vote for flying.  You don't have to pull over to the side and stop your travel every time you need to take her out to feed/change/play/etc...

We did a 2 hr flight a week ago, and L did great! :)

We're in the same situation- Myrtle Beach next month which is 10 hours or so for us. We're leaving at night and N sleeps really well in his car seat. If it goes poorly on the way down then N and I will fly home and my sister will drive back with DH. Good luck!

Fly!! We just got back from our first trip with Layla. The flight out was perfect. But what should have been a 3 hr flight for one leg of our journey back home turned into 5.5 with a storm delay. We were already boarded and then waited on the runway for 2.5 hrs till we actually took off.

She did surprisingly well with it all. To me, she was being a pill, but to the other passengers she was "such a good flyer." She actually got sick on the plane but managed to stay reasonably happy. If we hadn't flown, our drive would have been 2 days. Take off and landing didn't phase her a bit. Offered a bottle or her paci and she was good to go. Bring a few toys and books.

I was nervous the other passengers would be annoyed with us, but honestly I think they were just greatful she didn't scream the entire time. Any of her fussyness was mild and totally tolerable to them. The cheddar and broccoli soup she threw up made the plane stink to high heaven though, bet nobody eats that for a while!! So gross!
