Milk Storage Q

I've mentioned before that I don't pump often, so I'm kind of a milk dummy. I just realized if I'm going to get a babsitter on Saturday I need to become a pumping machine, as freezer stash is suddenly 1 bag.

So this am I pumped 7 1/2 oz. Should I put that into one bag or two? I have no idea how much he eats.

Sorry if this seems like an obvious thing. And I give serious props to all of you EPers!!!

Re: Milk Storage Q

  • If it were me and I were going to use it on Saturday, I would just leave it in bottles in the fridge. It should be fine between today and Saturday. Then you don't need to worry about defrosting it.

  • It's best to freeze in 1-4oz portions so you don't waste excess milk since it has to be used 24hrs after thawing. I do a variety of 1, 2, 3, 4 oz portions. With that amount I'd freeze like 2oz, 3oz and 2.5ozs but really any combination is fine.

  • Oh, reading fail ditto PP if you're using it in a few days, I vote don't bother freezing - make up two bottles and if LO doesn't take one you can freeze it later.

  • Oops, I forgot to mention that it'll also be taking a 5 hour drive with me, to get to said babysitter. So I thought freezing would be best, to keep it cool. I'm very curious to see how often I can really pump while still BF every "meal". I'd get a hands free bra, but it won't get here in time. Although I guess that pumping once a day is probably a good idea anyway

  • I'd probably still just refrigerate and take it on the drive in a cooler with ice packs. I would take an old bra and make yourself a hands-free pumping bra by cutting holes in the nipples :)

  • Ditto fridge and cooler with ice packs, you'll be fine.

For hands free pumping, take an old or super cheap sports bra, cut slits to hold the flanges, and voila! Hands free bra! I use that at home when it's not as big a pita at take on and off a bunch of times like at work.

  • You ladies are wonderful! Thank you! And the old bra trick is smart. I'm a hoarder, so I'm sure I have some old ugly bras around here somewhere. Although there's a secret part of me that thinks the less milk there is, the shorter amount of time I'll leave LO with MIL ;)

  • Ditto on fridge to cooler for the drive--I did that with 4 bottles driving 6 hours last week and had no issues.

I also pumped in the car but (since I wasn't the driver) just threw an A&A blanket over me and pumped with my regular nursing bra.

And t/j: I've always just thrown our freezer bags in a bowl of warm water to use immediately. When you say that frozen milk is good for 24 hrs after thawing, what thawing process are you talking about? If you're putting it in the fridge to thaw, do you count 24 hrs from the time it moved from freezer to fridge?

@RosiePeare‌ 24 hours starts when it is defrosted (no more chunks of ice).

  • I've had luck thawing milk in basically cold water. Faster than fridge, but I figure if it's warmed up, it's done. I just got a text from my boyfriend saying that the truck is having an issue, and we can't get it fixed until Tuesday!! I'm heartbroken, I was really looking forward to seeing my friend. I COULD take the Greyhound, but I'm not sure how that would work out.
