I can't stay awake and I'm about to give in.....

I really want some coffee. I am struggling to stay awake right now. First tri, surprisingly I made it through without my daily cup, but now....I am struggling. STM, did you have coffee during your pregnancy and everything turned out fine? I can't help but to feel guilty to even think about having coffee. What about Red Bull anyone have Red Bull during pregnancy?

Forgot to ask....Anyone have any healthy coffee alternatives? I'm not a big tea person though.

I've read that you can have up to 200 mg a day. That was confirmed by my doctor. That's about a 12 oz cup of coffee. Also, here is a guide to the amount of caffeine in Starbucks drinks. https://www.caffeineinformer.com/the-complete-guide-to-starbucks-caffeine ETA: My mom said when she was pregnant with me and my siblings, caffeine wasn't something they were told not to drink. She drank coffee all throughout her pregnancy with me, and I'm very healthy :)

I was working night shifts when I was pregnant with DD. I drank way more than the recommended 200 mg of caffeine. She was a perfectly normal infant.

  • My midwife told me at my last appointment to have a small coffee or a tea to bring my blood pressure up. I think a small coffee would be fine if you feel you need it. Definitely wouldn't do Red Bull...

  • I drank coffee (within the 200 mg guidelines) during my pregnancy for DD and again during this one. My pregnancy with DD was perfectly normal and uneventful and she's a healthy 2 year old now. I have no idea what else is in Red Bull that may or may not be safe, so I've stuck with coffee and an occasional Coke.

  • I drink a few cups throughout the week. I was surprised to learn how much less caffeine espresso has than drip though, and am loving the occasional iced latte! I'd do any of that before Red Bull though. ;)
  • I think the risk is more in the 1st tri with the link to miscarriage in some women. My doctor is conservative and said none through the my entire pregnancy since it was so difficult to get to this point, but I wonder if it was a more "normal" pregnancy with fewer complications if she'd allow it?

One of my good friends didn't drink caffeine at all during her first pregnancy and found that if she had any while breast feeding that it would affect her baby (ie wouldn't go to sleep). With her second she drank a cup a day and he tolerates her having coffee just fine while breast feeding. Like @IamInigoMontoya‌ she said she needed some perk to keep up with her 3 year old. Both babies are completely healthy! :)
  • Yuuum!! Thanks for all the responses. I feel sooo much better now. I have to show my husband this thread! :-) Hey hubby, the girls said it was okay. ;-) Caramel Macchiato, here I come. Interesting about the friend who did not drink coffee during pregnancy but did when she breastfed. Good to know! Thanks again for all the feedback! :x

Enjoy your macchiato! I continue to have my 1 cup of coffee or a latte every AM, and sometimes a can of pop later in the day a 1-2 times a week. Everything has been fine so far.
  • Have a cup of coffee. The recommendation is not to completely give up caffeine, but to limit it. I think red bull would be WAY worse. I've been having about 3-4 cups per week. Do a half caf if you really are worried.

I'm drinking a vanilla latte as I type this. Nothing wrong with under 200mg of caffeine a day.

  • My midwife actually said NOT to cut out caffiene completely and just keep it under 200mg, since the side affects of doing without when you're accustomed to it may only add to the negatives you're already experiencing during pregnancy.

  • I had coffee just about every day with my son and he is still perfect. He wasn't a tiny newborn, either coming in at 8 pounds. I'm not sure I could be pregnant and have a toddler and not have my coffee. Don't feel guilty. Coffee is just fine in moderation.

  • Btw. If you want something better to show your husband than 'a bunch of Internet strangers said it was fine ' look for articles written by Emily Oster, or better yet, read her book Expecting Better.
    Good to know, thanks! :-)

  • I avoided in first tri, but as a night shifft nurse and mom to a 2 & 3 year old, I never have "time off" and need caffeine to function! I have about 5 cans of diet soda/week, and coffee on the other days. My old self would have thought that was terrible...I had zero caffeine with DD1 until the last few weeks of pregnancy and not until 3rd tri with DD2. But this time it's all about survival! :-P

  • From the title I thought this thread might be about napping at work. The Seinfeld where George sleeps under his desk was on last night. I don't sleep under my desk, but I do angle my chair away from my office window and take 20 minutes snoozes sometimes. And I don't feel guilty. Maybe try this if there isn't a starbucks nearby?

Also coffee once a day everyday :)

Ohhhh girl, trust me. I was about to fall face first into my keyboard this morning when I wrote this post. I did lay my head down for a few seconds but had to pop right up when I heard foot steps!! :(

  • I have been missing coffee too. My RE had me go off it and I am just too big a weenie to drink it.

  • I drank coffee, mostly half-caff or decaf in my first pregnancy and had a very healthy baby. I also had coffee while breastfeeding for 2 years, and while I was careful to limit it to mornings only and only had maybe 2 cups a day, he never had any issues napping or with tummy issues. This time, coffee has been an aversion. :( So I've been having iced tea or soda if I want some caffeine. I just limit it to one soda or 2 cups of iced tea.
