Blue Cohosh

Hello! I have seen a lot of threads about evening primrose oil, red raspberry leaf tea, dates and other things to start labor or hopefully make it easier. I don't think I've seen any mention of Blue Cohosh on this board. My MW asked me to start taking this last week at about 37 weeks. I've done some reasearch but I'm still nervous since I've never heard of it before or know anyone who has used it. Has anyone out there used Blue Cohosh before or planning to use it? What was your experience with it?

Re: Blue Cohosh

  • I used a black cohosh and blue cohosh tincture under the direction of my mw with DS. At 39 weeks, labor began within hours. She did say that it would only work if my body was ready and on the verge of labor already. I don't plan on using it before 40 weeks (plan being the key word lol) but I am using EPO orally.

  • I have never heard of blue cohosh, so I did a little research (because like you I'm all for making labor easier, etc.). However, on webmd I found the following statement: "Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It is UNSAFE to take blue cohosh during pregnancy. Some of the chemicals in blue cohosh can cause birth defects. When taken by the mother late in pregnancy, blue cohosh can cause severe heart problems in the newborn baby. Many midwives still use blue cohosh to make childbirth easier, because blue cohosh causes the uterus to contract. But this is a dangerous practice, and it should be avoided." Obviously you received the okay via a medical professional, so maybe that takes more stock with you, however IMO, I would be cautious. Good Luck.

  • I think I'm going to trash it. Yesterday LO's heartbeat was fast. I have no idea if it's related or not, but since it seems this isn't popular I'm not willing to take the risk.
