Can anyone recommend a lawnmower?

Looking for a new lawn  mower.  Ours has been incapacitated for the last few weeks and my DH has not had luck with fixing it, therefore to end the constant annoyance and frustration in our house, my Mom is buying him a new one as a surprise, however I don't know enough about them.  We have a standard push mower now and are looking to spend less than $250.

TIA!

  • We're in the same boat. Don't buy one from Menards. That's the only advice I have. I'd probably get a self propelled one. Much easier to push and one with an electric start would also be nice (instead of having to pull the cord every time.) We bought one from Menards 3 summers ago. It runs fine when you can get it started. 21 pulls is the average before it fires up and it took DH over 100 at the beginning of the season. Also we noticed it burns oil. I hate that damn thing. GL and I'll be stalking this for ideas!

  • I've been researching electric ones...they sound awesome, but I'm wondering if they're a hassle since they have a cord.  Otherwise, they certainly seem appealing!!

There's a different between electric start and an electric mower, I think. Both of our neighbors have one and it's like you just push a button and it starts. Still takes gasoline I believe and no cords invovled. I know they run higher in $$ but if your mom would be willing to pay $250 then you guys chip in it'd would be a great investment.

  • If you have or plan to have a yard of more than say 20x20 skip the corded electric it will end up as more of a hassle than anything. We have this one: https://t.homedepot.com/p/Toro-22-in-Kohler-High-Wheel-Variable-Speed-Self-Propelled-Gas-Lawn-Mower-20378/203068811/

Or the older version of it. It's been going strong for 5 years this year DH did have to change the blade and clean out the carbirator.

We have a self-propelled Craftsman from Sears. I think it was the $265 model. It has the cord start, but I've never had to pull it more than 2 times. We've been very pleased with it.
We had a Craftsman before we moved that I mowed with.  It was very easy to start.  Pull cord, but like Sahara78 said no more pulling than twice.  It ran for years with normal maintenance.  Definitely get self-propelled!

  • @mrssqueegy‌, that's exactly what I was looking at was a Greenworks!
