Got one of those turtle sandboxes for LO on Craiglist (yay, love you Craigslist). Filled it with the playsand from the hardware store, even though I've heard some people worry about the OMG TERRIBLE CHEMICALS THAT WILL KILL YOU DEAD IN IT. So, I ask you, how terrible of a mother I am?

Raccoons are the ones you need to watch out for. They are a latrine animal so they commonly will go in sand boxes if they can find them. Some raccoons (usually a very high percentage of them) are carriers of a parasite called baylisascaris which are extremely dangerous to people. (And other animals but not dangerous to raccoons oddly enough). This parasite's eggs live in the raccoon poop for a very long time. It's transmitted by mouth so if a kid finds infected raccoon pop, gets eggs on their fingers and then touches their mouth, that's how it gets into them.
The scariest thing is that there is basically no cure. The parasite works it's way through the human body to the brain and burrows around in there. Eventually seizures happen and it's usually fatal.
I never knew about this until I went to school at a zoo and we had a raccoon who was a carrier. It had to be on special medication for the rest if it's life. Learning about this scared the shit out of me, especially since we had raccoons in our yard my whole childhood.
Now we have a raccoon of our own and thankfully he does not have this parasite. We had him dewormed when he was a baby and we do regular fecal tests on him because I am paranoid. We also educate people about this at our animal shows. It's alarming how many kids tell us they feed the raccoons in their yard and they come up to their door.
Sorry for the essay I just wrote but something as serious as this, you would think this would be something everyone should be aware of.
Having said all that, we do have a sand box (the turtle one) and I try to keep it covered. Our pig keeps knocking the cover off it like everyday so it's been more of a nuisance. I'm thinking of getting rid of the sand and just use it as a little pool.
