Sippy of milk at night?

So DD is now 2 and we have the bad habit of laying her down at night with a sippy of milk.  I forgot to ask her Dr. at her 2 year check up, but wondering if this is a habit we need to break?  We are moving in three weeks, so I'd either want to do it now or wait until after we've settled at our new place so she's not so thrown.  Any suggestions?  Do you still let your 2+ year old have something to drink in the crib - water incase they get thirsty, etc.?  We didn't go through the pacifier-fight, so I'm feeling clueless here....

  • We always did a sippy of milk after bath but before teeth brushing. Then we'd put him down with water. When we potty trained, we switched to milk with dinner and no liquids except a tiny bit of water in bed after dinner.

  • Thanks ladies...  we tried a bottle of milk tonight while reading, followed by brushing teeth.  There were a lot of tears (from both of us) but hopefully we have a new routine we can follow.  Thank you for your suggestions!

Bad idea. It causes tooth decay. Cut it cold turkey.

We don't put anything but I wouldn't be opposed to a sippy of water.

  • If cold turkey is too hard, try mixing with water or decrease the amount in the cup. It took us about a week to break this bad habit.
  • Not only is it bad for teeth but it will delay overnight potty training.

  • We give a sippy of milk before bed, brush teeth, then a drink of water. Nothing has ever gone in her crib with her.

  • oh seriously, just ditch the sippy all together.  You child doesn't need anything to drink overnight. Just give them plenty of fluids throughout the day.  Asking for water is a common tactic to avoid sleep. The answer should always be a firm "no".  And a bottle?  Why??  Just give them a small plastic cup and fill 1/4 of the way.

    And why are YOU crying??

  • We went through this with DD#1. We ended up replacing milk with flavored water and eventually plain water. I know how hard it is to see your lo upset. Maybe try picking out a cool leak proof water bottle that is just for bed. Both my girls have specific water bottles and it seems to make them happy. GL!
