3rd Trimester

crazy headache I can't shake!

I have had a terrible headache since Friday afternoon.  Yesterday I tried taking a nap, drinking lots of water, and finally caved and took tylenol with 8 oz of caffeine to no avail.  I have a doctor appointment for my 36 week check up tomorrow morning so figured I will definitely touch base about it if its not gone.  Any other tricks that help with headaches that I haven't thought about???

  • I would bring it up to your doc even if it is gone. Chances are it's nothing more than a headache. Mine was/is due to pregnancy induced hypertension, so doc took me out of work and we'll watch my BP carefully these last few weeks.

  • Do you have any other symptoms of pre-e? Unusual swelling of your ankles and wrists? blurred vision/floaters? Have you checked your blood pressure?

Like PP said it's probably just a headache but it could be something more as well. It may warrant a call to your dr before your appointment.

  • Thanks for your responses!  I did call the doctor and they wanted me to come in to rule out pre-e, which thankfully it is not the cause of my headache!  However, I all of a sudden am having a flashback to the wicked bad headache I had the night before I went into labor with DD.  I've had tremendous cramping today and lots of increasingly painful contractions that showed up on the NST.  Please say a prayer that I do not have my LO yet!  I'm 36 weeks, 3 days and would like to make it to at least 39 weeks! DD came at 37 weeks, but I would rather my DS stay in there and bake a bit longer!
  • I had a nasty headache and Sudafed helped

  • Are you weening yourself off caffeine?

  • I received a lot of advice from a friend, who has dealt with major migraines most of her life, but without knowing the source, it's hard to know what might help. For instance, some types of headaches are soothed by a cold pack to the back of the neck, but this may worsen other types. An APN recommended Benedryl but check with your healthcare provider first.
  • There have been no changes and I haven't had caffeine since before pregnancy!  My doctor just prescribed me a stronger version of tylenol.  I just took two and am praying that does the trick!
  • YOu might be dehydrated.  I was drinking tons of water (like 3 Qts a day) but my body didn't seem to be absorbing it.  I have added coconut water and a homemade gatorade drink and it gets rid of my headache everytime.  In my previous 2 pregnancies, I had migraines almost daily, in this pregnancy I have had the start of a few, but they all go away quickly.  Good luck.
  • I am having some of the same problems. Headache I can't seem to shake. It comes and goes and worsens with movement. Ie: bending over or moving side to side. They have checked my urine (24hr) and did bloodwork. So far neg for pre-e. Still have no clue what's going on. I am 33 weeks.
  • That's what odd though. It goes away with tylenol.
  • Also I mentioned in my comment that I just did all the testing for pre e

If it goes away with Tylenol it's most likely sinus or hormonal.

I would still call though anytime it won't leave you
  • I was wandering if maybe it was sinus related too since it seems to only happen with vast movement. Although, I have no other sinus issues really? Also when they did my cbc testing for preeclampsia my wbc count was a little high.
  • If you haven't already tried hot or cold on your head I would suggest that. I get killer migraines and ice packs are my savior, even when the pills+caffeine+food combo doesn't touch it. Glad you went and got checked for pre-e though. At least you know you are clear there. FX you don't hit early labor.

  • Yea I did a 24 hr urine + blood work and going in weekly to check also. They think I'm just having white coat when the BP cuff touches me
