PSA on SIDS

Found this article amd thought I would share the info.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/sids-risk-factors-vary-older-younger-babies-083418724.html

If you don't want to read, I'll summarize: keep babies on their back to sleep, give ample tummy time, if swaddling - leave arms out while sleeping once baby can roll over, if co-sleeping make sure baby is in a separate sleeping area, and keep pillows, blankets, stuffed animals and bumpers away from the crib.

Re: PSA on SIDS

  • This is the stuff my nightmares are made of. I think I am going to be one of those moms who has to wake up and look at the baby every 2 hours just to check that she is breathing.

  • Mee too @RedBaramid‌ that's why I thought I would share. I would hate for this to happen to one of us. Reiterate the risk factors and hopefully we can prevent it.

  • SIDS is absolutely terrifying precisely because no one knows the cause. I checked on DS's breathing constantly as a newborn and when he first started STTN this week I got up at 1am and 6am to check on him.

The things you listed are great safety practices to avoid suffocation, like @sparklegrump said. Suffocation is not SIDS though. Making sure the baby's sleep area has good air flow and baby is not overheated are also good safety recommendations to keep in mind.
  • You ladies are correct, a lot of that is great suffocation prevention.

The article did also mentioned that there is no exact cause of SIDS and that in a certain percentage of cases certain things were noticed (for example it was hypothesize that babies may sleep more soundly on their stomachs and not wake themselves up if something were to get in they way of their breathing) which is why it suggests not sleeping on stomachs and not having items in cribs.

Also, i personally feel better if there is any risk I can easily eliminate then that and there is reducing the odds of occuring.

  • Crib bumpers are these okay or not okay planned on buying the one that goes with our bedding set

There's general agreement that the cushioned ones are not safe. Some day mesh/breathable are, some say no. In the state of Md, ALL bumpers are illegal, so take that for what it's worth.

Totally! I'm going to be following all the safety guidelines I can find too, just like I did with my first. I wasn't trying to say this isn't a good post in any way.

Padded bumpers are not recommended as they can pose a suffocation risk and block proper airflow. Mesh bumpers are considered safer. Many go without any bumpers at all.
  • Okay I'm a FTM is it safe not to have some type of bumper in the crib ... Suggestions ... I don't really want to put bumpers in the crib if they are really not recommended

When baby is itty bitty they tend to not move too much so you generally don't have to worry about bumpers at all. Some moms never put in bumpers and some put bumpers in once their LOs start to move around in the crib.... if they stick a leg or arm out a slate and get stuck for example. As long as the slates are the recommended safe distance apart (no more than 6cm apart) than it is safe to go bumperless.
  • Maybe I'll go for the mesh bumpers ... Because what were concerned about is suffocation with them correct?
  • I was one of those moms that checked on my son constantly, I totally get it. But please remember that actual SIDS is extremely rare. If you look up statistics it truly doesn't occur very often. But I still recommend all these safety measures against suffocation as well. It's hard not to worry!

  • @herecomesthesun086 Yes, traditional bumpers pose a suffocation risk, so the mesh ones are safer. Make sure you fit them securely to your crib with the ties down and away from where baby can get them.

    @hizah05 I 100% agree with you.
  • Ah! So many things to be nervous about and she's hasn't even made her arrival yet! 10 more weeks :)
