Cervical Cerclage

Hello ladies... Just visited my High Risk Specialist today. I miscarried at 4mos with my previous pregnancy, and they say it was due to an "incompetent Cervix". I'm having the procedure done in a couple weeks and was wondering if anyone has gone through this or will be going through it too! :-/

Re: Cervical Cerclage

  • Possibly. At my 1st tri work up I will have a cervix length test to determine if I need a cerclage. At this point, whatever I need to do to hold on to LO, sign me up.

There is a possibility I might need one as I have had LEEP (removal of abnormal cells on cervix) done twice in the past two year and two months before conceiving. They are going to check me at 22 weeks to see if I need one but hoping to have them do it sooner.
  • My best friend lost twin boys at 6 months due to an incompetent cervix. With her second, she got a cerclage- worked like a charm!

No, you wouldn't know ahead of time. Incompetent cervix is rare, and there isn't any really accurate way to screen for it. Most women don't know they have it until they have had a late 2nd trimester loss. If you have had a leep or cone biopsy done they may take a wait and see approach, but it is rare to develop an incompetent cervix after those types of procedures.
  • There is a thread about this on the pregnant after a loss board, I am not smart enough to give you the link, but the title is 'Cerclage removed at 37 weeks.' You will get some good info there.

    BFP #1 11/02/13, EDD 07/04/14, BO diagnosed 12/12/13 at 9w5d
    BFP #2 6/12/14, DD born 2/21/15

  • I had a LEEP too but mine was over 10 years ago. This has always been a fear in my mind. My OB said she would just keep an eye on it, and we might do an u/s at 16 weeks to check. I saw one or two people post about LEEP, anyone else have this and had a successful pregnancy as well?

I had a LEEP in 2009 and had a successful pregnancy in 2012 (had to be induced at 42 weeks!).  The doctor who did my LEEP was really careful to take the tiniest sliver. When I was pregnant with DD, my OB checked my cervix length early in the second trimester due to my prior LEEP. He was looking for it to be at least 3cm long, and it was 4.5cm so he wasn't worried (I think those were the numbers -- it was awhile ago).

I was really worried about incompetent cervix too, so I get where you're coming from.  But, my doc said that the LEEP has to be pretty extreme (like they hack off half of your cervix) for it to cause negative effects.  Hopefully you have nothing to worry about.

(P.S. I'm new here ... hopefully it's okay to jump right in!)

I am worried about this with twins, I will be asking at my next appointment! My ob checked me at my 8 week appointment and all was well but I am still nervous about it

  • I had a LEEP in 2006, I never knew it could cause this. I wonder if I should tell my OB here about the LEEP?

My BFF is 29 weeks pregnant and has an incompetent cervix, it was found too late in her pregnancy for the cerclage. She's on bed rest and has been in and out of th hospital for 9 weeks. Her cervix was last meaasured at 1cm

How do they find that you have a incompetent cervix? Do you only know when it's too late to do anything about it?

they should also check your cervix length at your A/S. but prior to that, if you don't have a history they don't check/have a way to tell

  • My sister had to have it done. Her doc kept her on strict bed rest after it was done and thrughout her pregnancy. She will have to do this with each preg. I know of other women that were able to go on normally after the procdure. My sister is one of the worst that that her ob has seen. Thats y he is so strict with her
  • At my first visit last week, my doc said that I have a short cervix and may need a cerclage. She's referring me to see a specialist to determine if that is the case. So I'm waiting. I've never had it done before but I'm nervous, especially after loosing my last baby at 20wks. I just have to wait and see.
