Smoothie makers, come in!

For those of you who make smoothies for your LOs, can you share some of your recipes? I know I could google it and get some small number in the millions, but I wanted to go to my source of ones that were TTT: Toddler Tried and Tested. We do a decent job getting veggies in, but DS isn't a big meat eater. I'd like to get some spinach in his diet for some iron. We are also a strict water or milk only household (pin a rose on our nose), so I'd also like to give DS another beverage option that I feel comfortable with. Put me in the smoothie know.

Re: Smoothie makers, come in!

  • We do plain full fat Greek yogurt, some fruit (frozen berries, banana, mangoes etc...), a veggie (either kale or spinach usually or both), and then either some milk or water depending on how much I need to thin it out. I tried almond milk and she hated it!

  • I concur with all of these and suggest a little silken tofu. Makes it extra creamy and it's nutritional as well. I use coconut water over regular water too. Don't know. Just tastes better
  • I totally misread your title and thought you said soothie makers — as in pacies etc. Lol

I'm not a smoothie person, it's a texture thing. But we use yogurt and fruit when we make them. That's pretty much it. Sorry I'm not more help!

  • I typically just add whatever fruit we have around and then veggies.

I always have banana and strawberry in it because I think if you have those as the base you can add about anything else and it will taste fine. Then I add whatever fruit is around the house that I need to get rid of.

Veggies I have added with no issues (including from my DH who hates veggies)
    - spinach
    - broccoli
    - carrots
    - peas
    - cucumbers
    - avocado

Then I use either water or milk depending on if I think she needs the milk for the day.

I have also done where I keep 1-2 in the fridge for the next day. Typically I just throw stuff together, drink a glass myself and then have 2-3 cups for DD. She only gets one cup a day, so I have kept it for up to 2 days in the fridge and it's been fine.

  • I make smoothies every morning for me and DH and share mine with MJ. Sunday nights I take whatever fruit is in the house and split it up into ziplock bags and freeze them.
I normally do one banana a handful of strawberries a handful of pineapple and a handful of kale or spinach.
I put the frozen fruit in the blender and add some ice cubes and a little apple juice (the toddler or natural kind). And mix. If I have blueberries I throw them in the morning.

If there is extra I make Popsicles too. My daughter loves the Popsicles.

I don't have a set recipe. I just buy whatever fruit is on sale. I find spinach is very strong and the kale is less noticeable. Pineapple really makes everything taste good.

  • Thanks for all the ideas.  I was getting bored with our usual, which is strawberries, banana, frozen berries, and yogurt.  Sometimes I add peanut butter or oats to make it a bit more substantial.  If you do oats, blend them up first to break them up before adding other ingredients.
