Head Lice at Daycare

So head lice is going around my 19 mo DD daycare. She has been scratching at the back of her neck near her hairline for about a week now. I just thought her hair was tickling her since it's getting to be that length. I'm completely freaked out that she has it now and will be immediately checking her when she returns home this afternoon. Any experience? What should I look for? And if necessary, how to treat? Not to jump the gun, but if she has, when will she be allowed to return to daycare? Thanks in advance!

Re: Head Lice at Daycare

  • Get a pediculicide at the pharmacy. You have to leave that shanpoo on for like ten minutes. Then rinse. Most brands provide a two week protection against reinfestation too. Learned it the hard way when DD got lice in DC. Now i shampoo her hair w that pediculicide every two weeks. No reinfestation for the past 6 months

i love you, my little mooncake mahal kita

  • I actually don't think the shampoo from pharmacy works all that well.  Get a lice comb and just comb out her hair in sections.  Repeat until no more lice/nits are removed.  Use a mint spray to prevent.  Keep hair tied back as much as possible.  Lice can't jump; they have to crawl from head to head and must be at scalp to survive.  If your daughter's hair is pulled back, less chance of that happening.

  • Thanks everyone. Fortunately she's safe so far. My skin crawls just thinking about this!!
  • My daughter brought home lice last year from dc. We did the shampoo 2-3 times one week apart. Also I washed her bedding a lot and bagged up all her stuffed toys for a few days. It was a nightmare - since then I put her hair in French braids everyday and I add tea tree oil and lavender oils to her leave in conditioner. If there is lice going around her daycare I will also spray her with hairspray.
