how long did it take for your LO to latch?

When I had my DD, I had such a tough time getting her to latch correctly. I spent a lot of time with a lactation specialist and trying different positions to hold her.  I'm just about to be 38 weeks pregnant in like two days and I'm just thinking about starting this bf process all over again.  How long did it take for your LO and yourself to get in a good routine? I'm hoping this time I will have a LO with a good latch!

Re: how long did it take for your LO to latch?

  • I feel like it takes at least a few weeks to get comfortable doing it even if your LO has a good latch. When they are first born they are just so floppy and have no head control so just finding that comfortable position that works for both you you takes some time. I did find it to be much faster and easier the second time around but I feel like there is always a bit of a learning curve. Good luck to you with your new LO!

  • I've BF three kids.  You definitely have an advantage going into BF with experience.  You know what to do, but your LO still needs to figure it out.  #2 still took a few days, but #3 knew what to do after just the first day.  Every baby is different...but you knowing what to do makes a huge difference the second go around.  GL!

  • My DD was born early and took about 3 weeks to learn to latch on. It's been smooth sailing ever since, though! She's almost 18 months old and still going. :) The best advice I got was to never quit on a bad day.

I worked with the LC for five days in the hospital and no matter what we did, LOs latch killed since he was tongue tied. We took him to the pedi ENT on our way home on day 5. After the 1 min procedure, he latched on perfectly. It still took me weeks to feel comfortable nursing...once I problem solved one issue, another popped up. Eventually, things evened out and got easy (for now!) GL!
