twins plus older child, carseat order?

When the twins come my ds will be able 3 1/2 years old. I am trying to thinkbof what would be the best set up for carseats. They will be 3 across in the back of a ford escape.
The babies will be in bucket seats and ds in a 5pt harnass still. Would it be best for ds to be in the middle with a baby on each side? Or the babies side by side with ds on the outside? Might be easier to do up his harnass this way, but getting a bucket seat into the middle sounds heavy and ackward.
Thoughts?

  • We have the big one behind the passenger and the babies behind the driver and in the middle. It was the way that the car seats fit best - we have a Diono radian and two Keyfits. We tried having our oldest in the middle but didn't get as good a fit w the seats. Also, you'd have to leave a baby on the ground while you buckle in the big one and I didn't like that, especially in a parking lot or on the street. I can have him hop in the car, get the babies in and then get him buckled. You still leave a baby on the ground, but it's for far less time.

It's not too bad to lift the bucket into the middle. It's not my favorite thing to do, but it's possible.

When we had three across, I had to put my big kid on the driver's side, otherwise the driver's seat wouldn't scoot back far enough for DH.

This. We have DD behind the driver seat so that we can move the seat back further and it's comfortable for DH. We have a Dino radian and two keyfits... It was the only way and we even bought a new car. We have a Honda Pilot and it was a must to get the running boards. I'm only 5'1 so I need to stand on the running boards to get the middle seat in and out. It's not great but I just tell myself my arms are getting a killer workout. If we are in a crowded parking lot/street I have DD climb in on the passenger side past the infant bases to her seat, then I put the babies in and come around to the driver side and buckle her in. I usually get the babies out first and put their seats in a Snap n Go and then get DD out. That way she's not standing in a parking lot should I'm getting babies out.
  • The least protected child should be in the middle so in this case your forward facing 3 year old should go in the middle

  • I would just put all the carseats in and see how they fit.  I have a toddler that will be 2 when the twins come and we also have a Ford Escape and I am going to have to trade it in because there is no way we will be able to fit three carseats in there.  We have put my daughter's carseat and my friend's 3 1/2 year old daughter's carseat in and there is no room for another person or seat with two carseats.  DH truck's backseat is big enough we can put three carseats.  We are thinking of having the toddler seat on the outside because it will be easier to buckle her in on the outside.
