One of my friends just delivered her baby. She went in to be induced, then baby started having elevated heart rate and showing signs of distress.
She had an emergency c section and they discovered she had vasa previa. (I've seen this one time, but didn't know what it was called until now since it was a "near miss.") It is usually fatal for the baby because of rapid blood loss.
Thank God she was at a hospital with a level III NICU, and baby received blood transfusions immediately after birth and is now doing fine.
She is an MD, so she knows exactly how close things came, and I'm sure she's worried about any future effects that are unknown at this time.
Re: Prayers needed - friend's baby
how scary. I still dont' think I understand it completely, but it looks like maybe the umbilical cord does not run completely to the placenta, so the veins that should be in the cord are "free"? Kind of like a wire w/o the protective rubber coating? How odd that that isn't diagnosed in an U/S.
I'm glad everything worked out ok.
