I'm in the thick of this as well. My tips would be to take out as often as possible. Put the puppy on a feeding schedule and take him out 10 minutes after a meal. If they start sniffing around, take him out. Get done playing, take him out. Get up from a nap, take him out. When you cannot watch the puppy put him into an x-pen so he cannot potty everywhere or chew things up. So, when I'm doing the dishes and can't watch elsa 100% she goes in the xpen. When they make a mess make sure to clean up with an enzyme cleaner like Natures Miracle or Bac Out. Lastly, be patient. Both my breeders told me that puppies typically get bladder controlat 4 months of age .
Oh and this isn't potty training related, but check out www.dogfoodadvisor.com to make sure your feeding a quality food. Nutrition is super important with larger breeds, even though I feel it's important always.
Yeah, if she's pooping in the crate you probably have too big of a crate and you might be feeding too late in the day. You should be taking the pup out a few times overnight.
Oh, this is an important one. Don't take the puppy anywhere until they have all 3 parvo shots. No puppy class, no pet store, no walks. Keep them in your yard and house. Parvo can be contracted anywhere where dogs frequent and until they have all 3 shots they can get it. We had a parvo scare with Elsa last week and I'm really really careful. It's a ton of money if they do catch it and it has the possibility to kill pups if not caught soon enough.
We "bell trained" our dogs. I know this sounds ridiculous but it works. Hang a small bell or something that is jingely (sp?)within reach of the puppy, on the handle of the door you will always take the puppy out. Every time, I mean EVERY time you walk out the door to take puppy out, jingle the bell. It takes time, but after they catch on, they will go to the door and jingle it. I know your puppy is young but starting younger is the best. This technique takes consistancy. Over and over repitition and she will get it. Good luck!!
I managed to get her to poop outside this morning. I'm noticing it's about 15 mins after she eats. I can not thank you enough @cmeon_the_water. We're taking her to the vet this morning and I'm going to get her some better treats.
We now have an open floor plan so it's hard to keep her contained.
Do you or did you get up with your guys in the middle of the night? If so, what time?
I'm shocked you found puppy classes other than petco to take puppies before all 3 parvo shots. Mine won't except pups until 14 weeks and all 3 parvo boosters. The other training center won't take pups until 4 months and they must have their rabies shot as well as the parvo/distemper. Puppies before their shots can pick up parvo just by walking where other dogs walk, even after their first round or two of shots.
I know socialization is a big deal. I have a Klee Kai puppy, lol. I am socializing her where I know she's safe. I'm taking her around new places, people, and dogs. I just know where I'm taking her isn't frequented by a crap load of dogs that may or may not have parvo. I did the same for Ein as well. Both breeders told me not to take the puppies anywhere where unfamiliar dogs go until all 3 shots are completed. So, instead I've been training her at home, inviting people over, taking her to family parties, to MIL's house where she has 3 dogs, to other peoples houses where I know they have vaccinated dogs, ect. I love love love our trainer. She is a miracle worker and is a breeder. There are other ways to socialize than puppy class that don't involve unkown dogs. We already had 1 parvo scare and Elsa had 2 of her shots at that time. My cousin lost his pup to parvo last year thanks to puppy classes. It's just not something I'm comfortable with and I've heard more than 1 vet/breeder/trainer tell me the same.
Yeah, there totally is 2 different views on the subject. I'm just of the "better safe than sorry" side. No need to get nasty over it and try pulling the "Oh, Honey" card. I'm not naive, nor am I completely off base. I've raised many puppies, I love dogs. I mean, I'm making it my whole career. From being in 4H to Junior Conformation to herding and agility training. I'm not new. I get it, I AM young. I am not an expert. I'm just giving my advice and opinions based off of my experiences and research. It was not fun waking up one day to find Elsa having massive diarhea and shitting blood. It was not fun hearing the words that it could be parvo. It was not fun looking at extreme therapies and thousands of dollars if it was. I was careful, she had her second set of shots. Luckily, it wasn't parvo. It still scared the shit out of me.
I was just pointing out that there are many many many different forms of socialization and that puppy class isn't the end all be all of it. Elsa does go places, but it's to places I know are safe. She's been to our little holistic pet store once and I held her the whole time. Puppies are so much like babies. Just like with babies you get puppy parents with opinions. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.
I just suck at netbattling. Yes, those were my words. I should of rephrased to mean no going places where other dogs frequent. Which does mean puppy class, to me. Anyways, I like you and we're all just here to give advice for pups. We both love dogs, so lets just agree to disagree on this standpoint. I agree with everything else you've given advice on though. Even if you did say some bad words on grain free (I'm a weirdo no grain person, my dogs eat raw though). :P
Anyways, Elsa is fine. Turns out Resolve Heavy Traffic foam causes puppies to poop blood. She's getting her final parvo shot here soon and starts puppy class the first Monday of August. I'm excited for it. I loved puppy class with Ein. Hopefully Elsa can follow in Ein's footsteps and can get her CGC before her first birthday. If not then I have another agility canidate. Elsa is so freaking agile it's redic. Ein's going to herding camp soon.
Cmeon is your real name Cesar? You are like the dog whisperer.
I don't even have a freaking dog but I am in love with @notsharknado so I had to come in this thread to see pics of pup. I am however, trying to potty train a toddler, so maybe I will try some shit in here. I do understand having them shit in the yard is not generally socially acceptable, so I'll tweak some things.
The vet was closed today. We had a better day than yesterday and I spent $200 dollars on toys and treats and a smaller bed.
I'm very anxious to see the vet though since we and our neighbors (big dog people) suspect kennel cough. We are super worried. She seems like she's coughing and gagging. I know this is common in pet store dogs, but I'm hoping it's not something more serious.
I get ya @cmeon_the_water. I was joking about the food thing. I get the calcium and phosphorus thing. Corgis are small, but they way they grow are similar to big dogs and require the same puppy nutrition. I'm just being a big dork really. I think the training center we go to is strict due to parvo outbreaks recently and due to it being in our holistic pet store, even though we have a separate warehouse type thing.
Eukanuba just got recalled today. Check thatwebsite I linked . It does a star ranking for food. It's great and explains why certain foods are good and bad. Personally, I love Orijin, Acana, Fromms, Evangers, and I personally feed Honest Kitchen.

Of course the food we have for got recalled. Of course.

Yeah, it was what popped up on one of my feeds today. Eukanuba and Iams voluntary recall for salmonella. However, Eukanuba isn't that great to begin with. It has corn and byproducts in it, which isn't good for pups. Plus the minerals are not chelated, which means they won't be absorbed as easily.
She does in fact have kennel cough and a lung infection. She's on meds and hopefully she'll start feeling better by the end of the week. She's way worse today.
I am so sorry to hear that she ended up with pneumonia, it is a pretty common secondary infection with kennel cough. Poor puppy girl. She should start to feel better very soon, though. Make sure she eats, it can screw with a puppy's appetite, and she needs the nutrition now. It's okay to bribe her with something extra, if needed. More pics when she's feeling better, please.
Is there an easier way to give meds? It's liquid with syringe but she hates it!
Re: Puppy Potty training tips please and thank you.
However, she's only pooped in the house today. Really hoping I get the hang of this.
We now have an open floor plan so it's hard to keep her contained.

Our schedule is up by 8am and in bed by 10pm.

ETA I should say that I know for us I know all the dogs we visit right now are vaccinated and we're not playing in public places.
