Names

Does anyone else get annoyed when you look up names there are so much random ones. One literally said Abcde, HOW IS THAT A NAME? It's just frustrating, is there a site for just normal yet unique names. But not super unique where my child gets made fun of.

I like browsing nameberry, they have a nice mix of unusual and traditional I think.

How do you even pronounce that? Or do you literally say a-b-c-d-e?

  • @aks01 seriously I don't know. I just don't get what happened to the simple names! Thanks for all the name searching places. Apparently where I look they are just ridiculous!

I have a baby naming book copyrighted in 1934...it has some very unique (but not crazy) names :). Also try looking at the census (I like looking at the 1920's or 1930's)  good luck!

One of my friends is a teacher in Boston. She had a student last year whose name was La-A. It's pronounced La-dash-ah. :|
This is actually an urban legend. The name gets posted regularly on the baby names board, it's usually a friend that knows/taught a La-a, though there is not any proof out there that a La-a actually exists.

I would love a book like that! I'm into older names.

Yep, she's older and she is just as unique as her name!
  • Have had a patient named La-A! No urban legend and apparently they all over the country, as I live in Iowa! I didn't believe it either until I saw it with my own 2 eyes!
  • Whyyyy would you do that to your child? These names are ridiculous.

  • Great place to find names?  Credits at the end of movies.

Although we got Marnie as a side conversation from reading a baby names book... and Amanda?  I have no idea where she came from.  Just one of those "throw it out there" names, I think.

You never know where the right name will come from.... ;)

  • I can't stand the john johns and peter Petersens of the world. Your parents could think of any other name?

I see so many of these types at work and I've even seen the same first and last name a few times. Weirdos.

  • We went with traditional names for our kids, Lance and Andrew. I realize that Lance is less common, so we didnt expect to hear of too many kids with that name.
My BFF asked if I was concerned that Andrew would be too common, but so far no one know I know has named their boy Andrew. We do know several grown men named Andrew, but it really doesn't bother me. I don't expect my child to be the only person in the world with that name. If we have another boy, I want to name him James (I'm still debating that one though because I hate the nickname Jamie.)

  • When I was naming my daughter I picked out he name based in the fact that I had no relatives with that name and had never known anyone in school with her name. I`ve also taken the same approach with naming bub. But the names we picked are based on DH and my favorite horror movie characters.

  • I love the name James, but SIL's new husband is Jim and he's just cocky enough to think it was after him.  He's a nice guy, but I don't want to hear the joke about how we named one of our kids after him for the rest of my life.
I have a long list, but DH seems to like none of them.  I asked him to come up with some he DOES like and he made joke names up...I told him he gets no veto power until he has his own suggestions :)

  • We have a name for a girl, but not a boy. And since I have the girl name I will probably have a boy haha! And the name I like for a boy goes to closely with the girl name picked out!! It's tough!

  • I absolutely love old-fashioned names. My daughter has a fairly old fashioned name, so nuBaby will likely have one as well. That and it will start with a D. My daughter's name starts with DH's first initial, so nuBaby's name will start with my first initial. Narrows the field quite nicely.

  • Im with ya @digwriter.. ds is named henry lol definitely old fashioned. Next baby will be the same. Itd be weird to mix modern and old fashion in my opinion lol

Completely agree about mixing! We like one particular name for a boy, but it doesn't really go with DD's name. It isn't modern per se, but it also doesn't have that vintage feel.

DH`s pick for a girl is Ripley. Hes a Alien fan. My pick is Daniel Danny for short for the little boy in the Shining. Its easier to tell people its for the movie most havent read the book.

  • I've got an odd fascination with "E" names. I love Emma Kathleen (MN for MIL), but since I'm so sold on it we'll almost definitely be having a boy. DH wants to name a boy after him and his father, making the baby a "3rd". I really hope it's not a boy because I really really really do not want to go that route! I'm loving Emitt David (DH & FIL first name) or Ethan David. Any other Boy names that would go well w/ David as a middle name? :)

  • I had a French theme with my twins, Madeleine Violette and Sophie Adeline and decided if #3 is a girl I'm keeping up that theme with Josiane Emeline. DH gets to pick if it's a boy and decided on Braylon James.

We decided on a similar name if we have a boy: Brayden (with middle name Michael). Braylon is cute!

Thank you! I was actually kinda scared of what he'd come up with but I was pleasantly surprised. He's completely dead set on it and I love the name so this works out lol.

  • I try to stay away from the super common names, like if it's top 20, its out for me!!
  • Haha that would be a great name because Jacob was supposed to be my name if I were a boy! I like it! :)
