Couponing question

Anybody done the math before to see if using coupons saves you more than buying bulk at Costco? Overall, I guess.

Re: Couponing question

  • It depends on the items. With coupons I can get dish soap, detergents, cleaning supplies, paper products, toiletry items and vitamins cheaper than Costco. Things like produce, eggs, bread, milk, and meats are to me a better deal at Costco.
That being said... If I run out of dish soap and I haven't tracked a sale or have coupons, Costco is where I would get it bc the prices are good.

  • I agree with pp. Costco is not always the best deal. But for produce the bulk is usually too much for my family to eat too. Things I get at Costco- diapers if if I run out and there aren't good sales, baby formula, meat (so I can freeze), snacks, coffee creamer, SAMPLES! Lol. Just be careful- impulse buying at Costco really adds up.
  • My husband always does the math. Always. It's both helpful and obnoxious because he stands there in front of the diapers (or whatever) on his phone, comparing prices. I just kind of guesstimate.
  • It really depends on the item. I have found that a lot of times costco isn't cheaper. It just feels that way because of the size/quantity of the items. But when you break it down per unit a lot of things come out cheaper elsewhere. Then you add in sales and coupons and you save even more.

  • Like everyone else said, it depends on the item and the coupon/sales going on. ;)

For the things I purchase regularly, I have a "lowest price" sheet where I jot down the price per ounce/lb/each at Costco. Their Kirkland brand typically is cheapest so, I only do this for things I'm brand-loyal to, like Cotonelle toilet paper and Viva paper towels. Then, if at Target or Safeway and say OxyClean is being offered for $5 and I have $1 cartwhee/Just4U discount, I'll know immediately if it's a better deal there.

I don't do this for EVERY item, that would be nearly impossible, just things I purchase often AND am brand loyal too like Huggies baby wipes, Tide laundry soap, Cascade dish detergent, Olay night cream, Dove body wash, Pure water filters, etc.

For the things I'm not brand loyal to, I've found they are always cheaper at Costco like their Kirkland brand makeup removing wipes.

  • When I factor in my time, and the hassle of dragging my kids to a handful of stores to chase down the best price, I find the warehouse club a better deal.
