Anyone work 32 hours? What does your schedule look like?

I have my review coming up in August and I want to negotiate a 32 hour work week. With this position, I would need to be here 5 days a week, so taking off a Friday would not be do-able (even though it would be great) I have been going over options in my head, but just wanted to post this in case there were some that I wasn't thinking of. TIA

  • Shorter hours per day would be the only option for 32 hours during a 5 day week. Are mornings or afternoons easier to cut out of your day?

Could you do a half day two days?

I work 32-35 hours per week, but I do it Mon-Thurs.  I do plan to keep the same hours over 5 days when DS goes to kindergarten.  Ideally for 32 hours I'd do 7 hours M-Th and 4 hours on Friday morning.  That way I could use that time on Friday afternoon for errands/groceries/etc.

  • Fridays have the most flexibility here, so I may be able to ask for a half day- maybe doing something like 12-4 on Fridays and then 7 hour work days the rest of the week. I just want to be able to go to my boss with a schedule that works, is still in the best interest of the students and will ensure that I will be able to get my work done.

I do, well, supposed to do, 8am-3pm Mon to Thu and 8am-noon on Fridays for a 30hr work week. It's awesome when it works, but that's not often. Mostly because everyone else in the office is in the swing of their work day at 3pm and it's hard to suddenly up and leave in the middle of that, if you know what I mean. But, when I can do it, I love the early start I can get on dinner, the afternoon time I can spend with my daughters, etc.

  • I do and I love it!  My schedule is Tuesdays off.  It's kind of a random day of the week but Mondays and Fridays don't work to be off in my business.  Having a full day off for me is great b/c I only need 4 days of daycare for DD.  The cost difference between 6-7 hour days and 8-9 hour days is none so it is better for us to just have her in 4 days.

When I first came back from mat leave, I worked 24 hours, so I did 4 6-hour days for several weeks before going to 32 hours.  Trying to leave by 3:30 was really, really tough.  Most days it was closer to 4 or some days 4:30 to leave.  I also wasn't strict enough with my schedule and accepted meetings later in the afternoon than I should have.  If you have to be in the office everyday, maybe try to do a few longer days and leave around lunchtime on others.  Lunch seems to be a good break in the day to leave vs. trying to leave around 3 or 3:30.

Also think about what kinds of things you would like that extra time for.  Is it important to have a few hours in the aftenroon to run errands/cook dinner/be home for the kids to get home from school?  Or is it to have a bigger chunk of time to do longer errands or take kids to appointments?  That might help you figure out what kind of schedule will work best for you.

  • Ah, a 32 hour work week is my dream!

I think I would do 8-3 (or 330) M-Th and 8-noon Friday.  In the summer I'd want to do 9-4 so that I'd have the cooler morning hours to be outside.

I'd love to do a 4 day week but actually would prefer to work a short work day than fewer days.

Right now I'm blessed with a lot of flexibility so I'm not rocking this boat.

  • I work about 8:45-5:00 M-Th and 9:00-3:00 on Fridays, with an hour lunch each day. I love my schedule!

I do this every summer, plus extra vacation time.  I just pick a day off for each week.
