Did we discuss cord blood banking?

Anybody going ahead with cord blood banking? I'm trying to decide if it is something we should be doing...

Re: Did we discuss cord blood banking?

  • Yes we have discussed this. Most of us have/will be donating our cord blood. When I donated with DS there was just some paper work at the hospital and they took care of the rest.

  • Oh ok! Thank you, I looked back but must have missed the thread somewhere! Sorry:)
  • I would like to but it's waaay, expensive.
  • I will definately be banking my babies cord blood. My 4 year old son has autism and I know there are currently trials going on. I would like to have it available in the event that it proves helpful in the future.
  • Our hospital doesn't do cord blood blood banking and there isn't one for like 180 miles so that's out for us and privately slung is just out of our financial means.

Instead we will be doing delayed cord cutting.

  • We are opting for delayed cord clamping instead of banking or donating. That blood is extremely beneficial for baby's iron levels.

  • The chances of your baby or someone genetically related to him or her ever benefiting from the cord blood is extremely slim.  Donating (build up the public bank so we can all benefit) or delayed clamping (for your baby's immediate benefit) are great options to consider.

  • We are doing delayed cord clamping this time again. I agree with previous posters into look into donating the blood or seeing if where you are delivering practices delayed cord clamping.

I plan to donate - this was a good reminder to make some phone calls and get that set up!

  • I wish our hospital allowed donations... but alas it doesn't so we're doing nothin with it. I'd rather donate it and let it be a match for someone else than bank it, pay a lot of money for it, and let it go to waste anyways.

  • No donation here because the hospital system is insane. My doc does do delayed clamping as a general practice unless you don't want her to. We will do that again.

We are banking ours. My BIL is autistic, DH's family has a history of cancer, and my family has a history of alzheimer's. We would rather have it and not need it than miss out on our one chance to keep this resource. We already have the kit. We're fortunate to be able to afford the option and we're thankful for that. If banking were not an option for us, we would delay clamping.
