XP: Pumping Question

Do you have days where you pump less ounces than other days?  I pumped today at the same times as I always do and only got 4 oz and 3.5 oz the second time.  Last week I was getting 5 oz during both of those pumps and usually about 4 during my last one.  I still have one more pump to do at 4:30 today.  I was just curious if you ever had days where you got less than other days.

  • Totally. Don't stress it too much.

Yes, me too.  I hate pumping so it's always disappointing to not get as much output as I expected.

  • Yep. Supply varies from day to day. Based on a zillion different factors. It works that way with nursing too. If you're worried or begin to notice a consistent downward trend, try to pump more frequently to mimic the nursing pattern of a hungry baby.

I ep also. Agreed with what everyone said.
  • I EP and the biggest difference for me is the amount of water I drink. That being said, I am pretty consistent with my pumping output - an ounce an hour. I can sometimes get a bit more (like maybe .5 1 ounce more, but it takes a lot of water drinking in between and breast massaging while pumping). But generally I get one ounce for every hour between pumping sessions.

  • I keep track of how many ounces I get at each session and daily total, It definitely varies. Mine is also dependent on water and caloric intake.

Definitely varies based on what I eat and how much water I drink.
  • Mine varies too. I've noticed that I get more when drinking more water and eating oatmeal a few days in a row.

I've noticed a few things will drastically impact my milk production:

    1) Water - I can really tell the days I'm not drinking enough.  That's the quickest way to drop supply.
    2) Sleep - Not that we can do anything about it, but not getting enough sleep will impact your supply.
    3) Menstrual Cycle - Some people's supply drops when they get their period.  It comes back up after the cycle, as long as the pumping schedule stays consistent.

  • Thanks ladies!  This makes me feel a lot better!
  • I exclusively pump and it definitely varies! Biggest factors I've noticed are stress and how much water I drink.

Yes, stressing about how much you're producing Can effect it more than you think. I always try and do something mindless while I pump. Facebook, Candy Crush, Bump. Keeps my mind off watching my output and worrying about it.
