A few opinions on the name Rhett?

Hi ladies,

My 18 month old is Chase Edward and I recently heard the name Rhett in his music class on another little boy and fell in love with it.  I'm convinced I'm having another boy and in the running are also Reed and Ethan, maybe Eli.  All of these names including Rhett would be paired with Robert (after my father).  Can I get a temperature reading on some of these choices and how they mesh with Chase?  Any other names you can think of along these same lines?

Appreciate all of your help on this!

Re: A few opinions on the name Rhett?

  • I personally really like that name!  I've also heard people use the name Everett and then use Rhett as a nickname.

  • I personally do not like Rhett.  I find it sort-of redneck.  However, I do love Ethan!

  • Rhett Robert... now that sounds honestly classy. I like Rhett as a name; I only think it goes better with a longer last name since its sound is so short.

  • I'm not fond of that name, but I'm from the Northeast and I've never known anyone with the name. If I had, I might feel differently about it.

  • I'm biased--my new little guy is Rhett. I love it more every day and have never had anyone make a negative comment (though I know it's a name that isn't everyone's style). Most people tell me that they love it and find it refreshing. I like your other options, too (we considered Reid), but they are all much more common than Rhett.

  • I like it :) its on my long list at the moment. And I like the pp posts about Everett as well. I think Everett Robert sounds awesome!
  • I'm surprised that someone finds it redneck because all I think is Rhett Butler. I think it's a good, classic name. Not so sure of the double rs in Rhett Robert, but to each his own.

My association to the name is probably a little skewed due to the Rhetts that I know.

  • I really hate Gone With the Wind. I find its romantic view of the Lost Cause reprehensible.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the name Rhett, but the GWTW connection is very strong. I could not use it because of that. Before you do, just make sure that you are familiar with GWTW and are ok with it.
  • I like Rhett the best from the names you listed.

  • I prefer Everett nn Rhett but I really like it! I love Reed/Reid, Eli, and Ethan as well!

I agree with pps who suggested Everett, nn Rhett if you are using Robert for the middle name. Rhett Robert doesn't sound quite right, but I like Reed and Rhett the best of your choices.
  • I like it, Rhett, eli and reed not a fan of Ethan
  • I love it. All I think if is Rhett Butler (I get what pp is saying about GWTW but I see that in the book with Scarlett more than Rhett). I think it is an awesome name. I have never known anyone with this name.

Prob be prepared for a lot of "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Even though in the book it was just "my dear, I don't give a damn."
  • Love it! Rhett Robert is lovely

I don't hate it, it's also not something I would choose, but I like it for something different, it's definitely not common! I like it or Reid the best, especially with Chase!! Reid would be my first choice though!!
  • I like all of them and I think they go fine with Chase.  The only reservation I would have is too many Rs.  Like Rhett Robert or Reed Robert.  They don't flow as well as Ethan Robert.
  • I prefer Ethan or Eli/Elias with Robert as the MN. I don't like alliteration.

  • I don't mind it...I wonder if people will sometimes think you are saying "Brett"? That's the only thing to consider...
  • I really love Rhett. There's definitely a strong GWTW connection, but I don't have an issue with that association.

  • I'm usually a fan of a lot of nickname-y names as stand alones, but not in this case. I do like Rhett, but as a nickname to Everett.
  • I love the name Rhett, but I don't think it goes very well with Robert as a middle name. Too much alliteration. I think that of all your choices, Ethan goes best with Robert.

  • Thank you so much for all of your responses. I hadn't considered the name Everett since I'm generally of the opinion that you should name what you are planning to call the baby - BUT - since it takes care of the alliteration (which my DH is not thrilled with) it may just be a consideration. I just don't think I would honestly ever use the full name. Decisions decisions...
  • I love Rhett but can't get DH on board :( I also like it as a nn for Garrett.
I don't mind the alliteration of Rhett Robert and like it, but Reed Robert I'm not a fan of.
Ethan is overdone to me, but I do like Eli Robert; good flow.

Agree with the above. Everett Robert with nickname Rhett, if you really love the name. I think Eli Robert goes the best with Chase. I do love the name Rhett, but ALWAYS think of Gone With the Wind when I hear it.
