A nb question

I don't remember this from DD and don't feel like it is bad enough to call the pedi (I'll ask at our 2 week check up).

Is it normal for babies to wake and scream/cry every time they pass gas? Is this what one uses gas drops for?

Re: A nb question

  • yes it can be, yes on gas drops

Is she burping well after feeds? sometimes the extra pressure hurts their tummies too. You can do some "bicycle legs" and maybe tummy massage to help with the gas passing too if you don't have the gas drops on hand.  We started using "colic calm" drops around 2-3 weeks which is similar to gas drops.

Takes babies a while to figure out their own digestive systems

I used Mylicon drops when James was doing this as a newborn. It helped a lot even though he was later diagnosed with reflux.

  • She doesn't burp well at all, I think we've gotten 3-4 out of her since birth...
DD1 was a very puke-y baby (ended up with a reflux dx at 2 months), but she always burped well.
DD2 hardly spits up at all, but will go from a deep sleep to percing scream to passing gas then right back to sleep.

  • Colby hardly ever burped. I remember crying at the doctors office telling him that I would sit there for 30-40 mins and the kid still wouldn't burp, changing positions, everything. The doctor said if he hasn't burped in 5 minutes and you changed positions twice, give up. We used gas drops pretty regularly, although we found some brands worked better than others (weird, right) so if you don't notice an improvement right away, try a different brand.

  • Ethan did that. I think it's totally normal. We switched to sensitive formula for his gas and it helped.
  • E needed probiotics to help with some of that. Walgreens has Gerber soothe drops (used to be called BioGaia) that are dairy and soy free.

  • We had a similar issue. Ssince he also had trouble turning his neck, we opted for chiro. He was a different baby after a couple of appointments. If you don't find the gas drops work, it could be another possible option.
