NBR: Gifts. Help!

So we're going to a baptism and a birthday party pretty much within the same week and I have no idea what to get as gifts.

The baptism is for SO's niece, he's also going to be godfather so I figure he should get her something extra special/sentimental. (He's terrible at gift giving so he's enlisted my help.)

And the birthday party is for SO's cousin's son. Who is turning two. The hard part is that we don't spend a ton of time with them to know exactly what he's into and we dont really have much other experience with what a two year old boy would like.

Any ideas? TIA!

  • I'm pretty new to infant baptisms so I'm not sure what's traditional, but DH got his godson a personalized Noah's ark piggy bank with his name and birthdate on it. I think you can never go wrong with something personalized. I think we went to hallmark, actually...they had quite a few options for baptisms and engrave in-store.

  • DS will be 2 next week. He loves cars, trucks, planes, trains, and boats....I think that's fairly typical of a 2 yr old boy.

  • We gave a share of Disney stock to our roommates from college son. We aren't religious though and it is so difficult to do bonds now...
Anyway one share.com was kind of cute and a fun way to start the kid's savings/portfolio. Not super sentimental though....

For our godson (who was baptized just a couple months ago), we bought him a really nice statue of St. Peter (his name is Peter). It's like 10-12" tall and will have to be up pretty high until he's much older, but it's something that he can keep all his life if he wishes, and he can ask his namesake to pray for him. We thought it was a cool idea!

We got this one from amazon:

That would really only work if she shares names with a saint, though!

Another baptismal gift option would be an inscribed bible, a cross for his wall, or a nice rosary.

For the 2yo, I would check out the age-appropriate Melissa & Doug toys or puzzles. Wooden toys are so well made. DS (2.5) liked/likes:

ETA: details. I also second the rec of duplos!! They're awesome.

  • For the baptism, I was in this situation with my DH...then bf...for his niece. He gave a monetary gift, which is customary in his family. You can, of course, do something sentimental if that is what you were thinking. Personalized gifts for a baptism would be really nice.

For the 2 year old, I agree with PP, Melissa and Doug anything. Otherwise, crafts, cool toy cars, or a sports set.

  • I have no clue on a baptism gift, but I second any kind of vehicle (truck, bus, plane, cars, boats, etc) for a 2  year old boy.

  • My two year old and my friend's two year old are both obsessed with trains! Target has some generic ones that my son loves and they have little magnets to connect them. Toys r us has a whole train aisle.
  • I'm not sure where you live, but a traditional baptism gift in Texas might be a charm or other piece of sterling silver jewelry from James Avery.

  • Another vote for some kind of vehicle toy for the 2 year old.  I like Green Toys brand stuff, and Melissa & Doug wooden toys are always great too.  TJ Maxx usually has both of those brands.

I have no clue about baptisms.  I always thought cash was the traditional gift for stuff like that.

  • A nice chunky puzzle is always a good gift for a 2 year old. Or some thicker-paged books. As for the baptism, I have no idea. I wasn't aware you were supposed to get a gift for that . .

  • For my son's baptism, he received a lot of personalized gifts. Things Remembered is great for that! If you have one local, they usually have it done within a few hours. He also received a lot of savings bonds.
  • Thank you for all the suggestions. We still have a little bit of time to think about it, but Im going to shop around and see what I can find. :)
