3rd Trimester

Stretch marks..

Hello,

I'm pregnant with my first.  I'm at the end of 29 weeks and I've just discovered my first set of stretch marks.  I know they're natural, some may say beautiful, and they may even go away but I'm still feeling a little self conscious about them.  I've been using Mothers Special Blend and was really hoping for a miracle.  I hear older women who all brag about not getting them, blah, blah....meh.

Any way, I'm just wondering if anyone is or has used anything worth looking into.  Not looking for a miracle just something to help lessen the appearance once I've delivered.  -something to apply now.

I can deal with them..Just wondering.  Thanks!

Re: Stretch marks..

  • Stretch marks are more genetic and you can use all kinds of products and it won't necessarily prevent them.  I use Burts Bees Mother's Belly Butter right now, not so much to prevent stretch marks (even though it's "supposed" too), it helps the itchiness that comes along with your tummy getting bigger.  It's hard to not be self conscious about them, just remember they are very much a part of pregnancy, some people get them and others don't.

The big plus is they tend to fade afterwards.  I didn't get stretch marks with my son until 38 weeks (I used store brand cocoa butter lotion that pregnancy), the night before I was induced and by my 6 week postpartum appointment they had faded to silver and were hardly noticeable.  All those marks came back pretty early on this time around and then some and get worse every day, I'm hopeful they will again fade as I get my body back to it's normal state.

  • My mom used Cocoa Butter when she was preg with me. I don't think I ever remember her  having stretch marks. I, on the other hand, already had stretch marks from when I weighed a lot more than I do now, so my sexy ship sailed a long time ago, lol. I just use regular lotion to keep my tummy from itching.

  • I've been using Bio-Oil. I don't have any yet, but it's still early. It has helped a lot with the itching and dry feeling though.
  • If you expose them to UV rays they will get darker and resist fading, just like any other scar tissue, so avoid tanning any part of you that has stretch marks.
  • Most of mine appeared AFTER LO got here! They are fading pretty quickly... I used one tube of the mederma stetch mark therapy. It was like $35 so I was skeptical but tried it. Whether or not it helped the fading process, I don't know. He is almost 6 months old and they are pink now instead of the dark purple they were.
  • Time & coconut oil. They do usually fade.

  • I got them pretty badly in my late teens/early twenties after I lost a lot of weight. They're on my hips and thighs and have faded to silver/white, and I am getting a lot of them tattooed over. When I have a tan, also, you can barely see them. I'm at just about 33 weeks and haven't seen any yet but I am pretty sure since I've gotten them before, I'll get them later - I've been using sweet almond oil in the shower just about every day and hoping for the best!

  • For me, genetics was a big factor in me getting them big time.
I got stretch marks during puberty, especially on my inner thighs. On a positive note though, they've faded to the point where my DH didn't even know I had them until one day I was complaining about them and he denied I had them. I actually had to point them out to him, and it's not like he's not super familiar with that area of my body.

This pregnancy I started getting stretch marks even in the 1st tri, so you can imagine by now they've spread like wildfire all over my belly. I've been using Palmers concentrated cream and belly butter twice a day and instead of being red and inflamed, the ones around my belly button have actually returned to normal skin color, albeit with a slight shimmer to them in the right light. The newer stretch marks around the edges are newer, so they're more pink, but I'm sure they'll face just like the ones around my belly button did.

  • I know Palmer's Cocoa Butter can do wonders at preventing them... supposedly it also works to "reduce" them later, but I'm not 100% sure if it works.

Wrong.  Nothing can prevent stretch marks, especially not anything topical.  Stretch marks are genetic and if you're going to get them, you're going to get them.

I got them with DS around 35 weeks and they faded pretty quick and you don't even notice them unless you really go looking.  I haven't gotten any yet this pregnancy, but I know they can show up at a moment's notice.

  • They will lighten after baby is born and the months after. There is no way to completely get rid of them but they will hardly be noticeable later on.
  • Dang, am I the only one got stretch marks really, really early on? Everyone here seems to have only gotten them at 31 weeks+, but I saw the first one at like 24 weeks. Good thing I've never been a bikini kind of girl, I suppose! "/

I got them on my hips and boobs about 24 weeks. They're small and actually just look like little red fingerprints. None on the belly yet.

  • It's been three months since I delivered so I'll obviously be having them at my stomach. although they are lightening a bit I'm skeptical they'll ever go away completely. My mom still has them on her tummy!! Try using Palmer's cocoa butter but I don't think it completely vanishes them.
  • I'm unfortunately prone to the stripes. When I hit puberty my hips, thighs and breasts all became little zebras. You can't prevent them, but you can take care of your skin to make sure they fade well and that they don't itch as your skin pulls. Avoid tanning, use lotion, eat a diet full of collagen rich foods (which encourages elasticity in the skin), and you're doing everything you can.  I'm sitting at 27w and change and I'm just starting to gain new strech marks from the baby, but some of my older ones, (from being a big girl in my late teens and early twenties, then losing some weight) are started to brighten up about a month ago.

I'd love to see as well! I'd like to tattoo over some of mine in a year or two.
  • Please keep in mind that you can get them after you deliver, even if you avoided them the entire pregnancy! I found out that stretch marks can show up from rapid weight loss a few years ago when I dropped 100 pounds in four months and still had new ones showing. It sucks, but I already had them and they were pretty noticeable. Cocoa butter hasn't worked on the old marks, but I started putting Palmers on the new ones and it kept then from turning purple. They pretty much stayed that fleshy pink color.
  • When i was 20 weeks pregnant and started showing, i had about 6 big dark pink stretch marks in like a C Shape on each side of my belly button ( 3 on each side) i wasn't too fussed. come 38 weeks and i have a lot more stretch marks but none as deep as the first 6 i got. i have thin little veiny type ones under my belly and a few on the top of my hoo-haa lol lol i have very good skin and no marks apart from my new tiger belly!! they used to be itchy but i have been moisturising since i 12 weeks preg with bio oil and palmers. Hoping they will fade a great deal after baby arrives!!
