Baby name help!!!

Okay guys I really need help! Originally me and my husband decided we were going to name our son Milo James, but now recently my husband has been trying to convince me we should name him Pilot. At first I hated it but now I kinda like it and it it gives me a super cute idea for the nursery. I don't know, is Pilot a weird name?

Re: Baby name help!!!

  • Loading the player...
  • One more thing: I would appease husband and use it for a nursery theme too.
  • Yes, Pilot would be a weird name. Imagine later on in life your child goes to introduce himself at a job interview and says, "Hi, my name is Pilot!". EVERYONE will have to ask him to repeat his name just to make sure they heard him right, then everyone is going to want to know WHY his name is Pilot.

Like PP said, definitely don't post this on the Baby Names board...

  • Yes. It's a strange name. Cute nursery theme, not a cute baby name. Sorry. :-S

  • It is a weird name.  I think as a baby it is cute.  As an adult I don't think it is great.  I could not imagine a strong leader named Pilot.  It will also depend on your last name.  Where did your husband come up with it?
Live like there is no tomorrow..Love like you have never been hurt...
  • Yeah sorry - I think it's weird too. I don't even think it's a cute baby/kid name or nickname. It definitely doesn't sound like a solid adult name to me either.

  • It's a bad name. Please don't cripple your child with that name just so you can use it as a nursery theme. What if you wanted to do a whale theme? Or baseball? This is not a good idea.
    image
  • No for your child's sake, please do not use that name.  I'm sorry but it isn't a good one.
  • I wouldn't do it. Every time your child introduces himself he is going to have to repeat it and spell it and deal with comments.
You can still keep the nursery theme!
  • I would lean more towards using it as a middle name.

    Milo Pilot?
    James Pilot?

That way, DH (or everyone) can call him Pilot as a nickname, but he has a more traditional name to fall back on if he feels the need for that.

Love it as a nursery theme.

  • Yeah that's an occupation not a name to me. I love Milo! That is still fresh and a great name. Pilot is just way too out there. Keep the nursery theme, change the name. :)

  • Cute nursery theme, odd baby name. I much prefer Milo.

  • the theater nerd in me automatically thought of Pontius Pilate, from "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat". And he's really a pretty awful character
  • I'm not feeling Pilot...or Milo for that matter. Sorry.

I love those shows! But I don't think Pilate was in Joseph. It's an Old Testament show! Pilate was around when Jesus was condemned.

ETA: And for the theater (or Bible?) geek in me... I always had a soft spot for Pilate. I think it was because the chief priests at the crucifixion were like "Why did you write 'King of the Jews'? You should have put, 'This man SAID he was the King of the Jews.'" But Pilate was all: "What I have written, I have written." And that always seemed kind of subversive, in a good way, to me.

Hmmm, maybe the name Pilot/Pilate is growing on me! ;)
I LOVE those shows, too!  But it sucks being in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat as a woman...  You're either Potiphar's wife or the narrator or just a random faceless woman...

Pilate is not in Joseph.  Elvis/Pharaoh, Potiphar are the two you might be thinking of.

  • I don't hate it, but I'm a fan of somewhat unusual names, I suppose. I do tend to agree with others that it feels like a name that won't age well. On a 2yo, I think it's really cute. Once he's 30, I'm not sure.

FWIW, I think I like it as much as Milo (which I always have trouble with... is it pronounced MEE-lo, or MEYE-lo?).

  • Yeah, Pilot is a weird name for a kid. That sounds like something you would name your dog. And having a cute nursery theme is not a reason to name your kid something. They will some day grow out of their nursery, but will be stuck with that name forever.

  • Thanks guys, yeah Pilot is just too unusual we will definitely be staying away from it!
  • I right away thought "Pontius Pilate".
  • Late to this party. That is a terrible name. It's an occupation, not a name.

Pilot is an occupation; so is Hunter, Taylor, Sailor... which caught on as acceptable names.  I think it's got a neat ring to it :)

Potiphar's wife, haha. Doesn't she have exactly one line? "Come and lie with me, love!" ;)
Haha one line and (depending on where you perform it and the intended audience) a particularly raunchy act behind a curtain with Joseph.....

  • I love Milo! go with that one!

  • Use it as a nickname.
  • hmm. don't know how to snip....

never was actually IN those shows, just watched and also the movies, hence the err. Although the Joseph movie with Donnie Osmond is TERRIBLE!!
  • I would lean more towards using it as a middle name.

    Milo Pilot?
    James Pilot?

Love it as a nursery theme.

This. I had a hurricane my first year of teaching he had an actual first name James, James hurricane but went by hurricane. It was odd. When I introduced him to the class one of my students was like hurricane is that his real name? Thank god he did have a real first name but he never used it.

  • Its a cute name when your little and then becomes questionable as you get older. I am went to school with a Major...and well...it was interesting. Most teachers repeated his name the first day of class or tried to pronounce it with a french accent or something.  I would stick to Pilot as a theme.

    Good Luck!

Do you mean Tailor? Sorry I still don't think Pilot should be a persons name. Especially if their middle name is Inspektor. I'm looking at you Jason Lee...  [-(

  • Sailor is a name? Wow, that's new to me.

Just because a few occupations can make good names doesn't mean that they all can. Occupations that should not be names: Prostitute, Meat Packer, Proctologist, Septic Tank Repairman.

I think people spell it Saylor or Sayler.

Edit: your short list cracked me up!

  • If like it go with it, not my style but as long as pair with strong middle name or first (if use pilot as middle) think will work out. I know plenty of adults who go by middle name or a nickname picked up and would never know wasn't there first name.

We were keeping our names private, but now that you brought it up....can you explain why you think Meat Packer makes a bad name??

  • I've most definitely heard of worse names.  For instance, Ryker.  I will never understand that name choice as long as I live.  So compared to that, I like it.  I probably wouldn't use it but I don't think it is as awful as some others think.

Not a typo, I mean Taylor, the surname turned given name with the same meaning as Tailor.

BTW nameberry has a section devoted to occupation inspired names.
  • Anything can be a name. SHOULD it be a name? Now that's a personal opinion. To me, Saylor or Sayler or whatever shouldn't be a name either.

  • Pilot is bad. Use it for a nursery theme but not a name. Milo James is a great name. Pull the mom card and use veto power on your husband!
