S12 babes at the movies?

Has anyone brought their s12 babe to the movies recently? The new planes movie is coming out and keagan really wants to go see it. Our theater does a discount day Tuesday but I wouldn't have anyone to watch Colby. We would be going with some other friends, so if Colby was awful I could always leave keagan with the friends inside the theater and just play in the hallway with Colby. Are our kids too young still?

At the risk of sounding like a judgmental fuddy duddy, I respect the other people in the theater too much to bring a toddler. For these reasons:

1) Even if you leave as soon as your kid becomes disruptive, s/he's already been disruptive.

2) A lot of parents, myself included, sometimes have toddler blinders in terms of what constitutes disruptive behavior. That is--if my kid is happy but is making occasional small noises, I might think she's fine, but she may still be bugging other people. You have to be absolutely objective as to what to pull your kid out for, and I think that's harder than most of us admit.

3) Even at a kids' movie, they either waited until their kids were old enough or left younger kids with a sitter. It's not fair of me to insert my toddler on their experience.

The only exception I would make for this would be the baby-friendly showings our local theater occasionally does.

No way I would take Leo to a movie. James has never been to a movie but I think we will try the new Planes movie as his first. Maybe, still undecided about him and he is 3.5!

Plus, random aside--I still remember going to my first movie. It was a big deal "grown up" kind of thing--I think I was four. I feel like it was a minimilestone for people our age, and I want to recreate that with DD.

that cherry has already been popped, I brought Colby when he was 8months old and just nursed him the whole time;) you make some great points, as always. Whenever we have gone to the Tuesday showings (which is just about always due to budget) the theater has been empty, so I'm also taking that into consideration.

There is no way DS could make it. He won't sit for more than 20 mins. with his favorite show on. It sounds like it might be doable in the situation you described though. You know your LO better than anyone else so you'll have to make the call.

We went to a bunch of free movies last summer. Seany did horrible. I know that was a year ago. We kept going, though, because we had friends that went with us. Ethan stayed with the friends while Sean and I walked around the theater. Ethan still got to enjoy the movie, have some popcorn, and hang out with his friend.

No way I could take Audrey, she would sit there for maybe 10 mins and then be all over the place. Plus, even if she sat still I would be so stressed about her disrupting people that I wouldn't enjoy the movie.

I know some theaters have baby/toddler days, do you have anything like that near you? I have a friend in CA who goes with a moms group once a month on this particular day; the volume is not as high, the theater is not as dark and it is full of little ones so being a bit disruptive is not a big deal.

I'm going to sound like I'm about 80, but wouldn't it be too loud? I know the theater closest to us is so loud, we had to leave a movie not too long ago because the noise was bothering our inside baby. Like as in, she moved non-stop the entire time and it became painful at one point. We got up and left because it was deafening. Is it a different decibel level for kids movies?

We took Nancy to Rio 2. Had there not been 4 previews AND the first 5 minutes of How to Train Your Dragon 2 & some other animated movie coming out we would have made it through the whole thing. We left about 20 minutes before the end because she was done with it.

Also, we went to a showing at 10am, so all the people in the theater had littles from younger to Nancy to maybe 5? 6? There were probably 12 kids total. We also weren't sitting close to anyone...the closest Mom & kids was 4 rows away, and she had a baby and a toddler with her.

This my kid won't even sit still for more than 5 minutes of MMCH and that's the only TV she has interest in watching.

Generally, nothing on TV holds her attention for more than 10-15 minutes MAX. A movie might be different with the huge screen, but I honestly have no desire to try until I think she (and I!) will really enjoy it.

Could you do a Keagan/Mommy date while DH watches Colby? Maybe over the weekend? Or in the evening during the week?

Jack is also super excited to see Planes 2 and I'm sure one of us will take him, while the other stays home with Will or does something else.

With your situation, Tuesday discount day, if there's not usually many people, and you have a back up plan for keagan to stay, I would do it. In the right mood AJ would love the theater. Eta: auto correct sucks

DS1 went to his first movie a month before he turned 3 and did awesome, it was Frozen btw. DS2 came along for the ride and surprisingly made it through the movie but he loooooves music so I figured that was what kept his attention throughout. We haven't been back until this summer.

So now we've been doing weekly theater trips all summer. Our local theater does 10 movies for 7 dollars (1 per week). It's been a great way of getting the kids out of the house, doing a mommy/double son date, and stay out of the heat. The movies are animated, but not new releases and understandable that all young ages will be there from infant to maybe middle school. It was a good way to trial out DS2 for movies. and its a way different environment/crowd of people that go compared to a new release movie. We've made it through all the movies no problem, although the end of lego movie & smurfs2, DS2 did get a little squirmy which I attributed to them not being fully animated movies. A little popcorn and a fruit pouch though and we were good to go.

As proven by the answers above - I think this totally depends on your kid. Brody would have never sat through a movie at this age, but he wasn't exposed to them this early either. Aedan catches movies more often due to big brother watching them. I actually think the darkness of the theater and the large screen may capture his attention through an entire movie.

We're debating taking him to see Planes 2 during one of the early showings where there are rarely any people there. I think knowing your theater well enough to know how busy it is is important. If we do it, we'll both be going, so one of us can take Aedan in the hallway if necessary.

FTR, we saw the first Planes in the theater (only Brody's second movie in a theater) and the kids in there were far from quiet.

I haven't attempted a movie at the theatre but we watch the msg home. DS gas a great attention span for it which surprises me because he's so on the go. That being said I think it depends on the kid. I'd try it.

I took DD to see Frozen in the theaters when she was 2.5y. She was entertained for about 30-40 minutes, and she has a pretty good attention span. I'll try another movie when she's around 3.5y. DS I'm not even going to attempt until around age 3.

Funny you posted this, we went to see How to Train Your Dragon 2 last week! Cruz was mesmorized for the first 45 min, then I took him to run around outside for a bit, then back into the movie (my husband and daughter watched the whole thing). My daughter was maybe 2.5 when we first took her to a movie and she has always done wonderfully....I think we'll have to wait a while before we try with Cruz again though.
