Gestational Diabetes

I'm a FTM and just got my results back from the glucose tolerance test (3hour). I failed :( I haven't heard from my doctor yet, but really concerned. I know I'll be able to stick to a strict diet, but just concerned about the health of the baby. I have done a little research online and have read some bad things, and just really worried right now.

Anyone else been diagnosed with GD this pregnancy or a previous pregnancy and have any pointers or reassuring words? Thanks!

I've had it twice (including this time) as long as you keep your blood sugar under control your baby will have no problems :) my son was perfectly healthy and I was diet controlled. My 2nd child I was borderline GD and my son was big; 9lbs 6 ounces but healthy as can be. Just watch what you eat and monitor your sugar and you and LO will be fine.
The good news (well for me its good news lol) you can't go past 40 weeks! So you know you won't be overdue!
Good luck with everything and don't stress!

Edit: my second son was so big bc I didn't follow the diet since I didn't ethnically have GD

  • Thanks so much! Very reassuring to have feedback from someone who has been there and had healthy pregnancies! :)

I had GD with my first pregnancy. I was diet controlled and GD was a blessing for me because the diet resulted in me hardly gaining any weight in the 3rd tri (I gained almost 20lbs in 1st and 2nd tri so gaining less weight in 3rd tri was good). DS was born at just over 7lbs and had no sugar issues at all - our pediatrician said that she couldn't tell I had GD from looking at him. I was never hungry while on the GD diet but really got tired or pricking my finger and checking my sugar levels towards the end.

I know that it's a scary time right now for you - just get educated, get a blood sugar meter and you will feel more in control.

  • I know exactly how you feel! I was diagnosed with my last pregnancy and I was devastated at first but with controlling my diet everything was fine and it really helped with the weight gain and making sure I was eating healthy for LO! The other good news at least for me was that I was being monitored pretty much weekly towards the end because of the GD; I had ultrasounds and NST tests as well as meeting with the doctor that was monitoring my GD weekly and then OB appts twice a week; so I was constantly reassured that my baby was doing well! You'll be fine!!

  • Also, I wanted to add the diet is not really that strict (if you plan ahead).

For me I get to eat 30 grams of carbs at breakfast, 30 grams of carb for mid-morning snack, 45g carbs at lunch, 30g of carbs afternoon snack, 45g of carbs dinner, and 30g carbs at dinner.

Clearly you are not restricted from eating carbs but you do have to stay away from sweet treats.  I am two weeks in and currently I really do miss a bunch of the things that I "can't" have.  It is kinda of like Weight Watchers in regards to eating portion controlled balanced meals.

  • I was diagnosed a few weeks ago and am finding that eating all of the needed good carbs can actually be a challenge at times.  Mainly at lunch and dinner as my carb requirement for those meals is 60 grams.

You will also discover what foods raise your blood sugar more than you think that they would (for me, it is fruit, bread, and milk that cause a larger jump while potatoes and beans/lentils barely register at my 2 hour check).

Biggest challenge has been my DH - he is getting tired of having to eat my diet at home and keeps trying to suggest foods that I can't eat (like ordering pizza for dinner).  If you want it that badly, eat it for lunch at work where I can't see it.
