Trouble TTC

beta blood test necessary?

So I did a HPT with FMU this morning at about 10 DPO and BFN (what else is new?)  I know it's still early and I am going to do another test in a day or so, but my gut tells me it's a negative.  My RE is still making me come in at the end of the week for a beta blood test. Every time I go in for blood work it's $120 OOP, I told her I didn't want to come in if I really don't have to, she told me it's the law, since I took Clomid.  Has anyone heard of this?  I feel like it's a waste of $ since I'll know by then without the blood test.

Re: beta blood test necessary?

  • My RE's office might not be following the rules, I don't know.  They did not schedule me for any betas after my IUI.  They told me to just take an hpt at 14 dpiui and then call and let them know the results of it.  I did take Clomid and a trigger shot, so if that really is a law then they are not abiding by it.

  • I just spoke to my mom and she said, sounds like a cover your ass thing.  I'm in NJ, don't know if they're full of it or not.  I don't have a problem with the u/s's but it just seems like a waste of time and money to do a blood test when a HPT is negative.  The office is almost a half hour away so I have to be late for work.  I'd rather them tell me they're covering their ass then give me some bs story about it being a law....ugh, I'm so over it.

  • The "law" (good medical practice that they could be liable for not following) is to have a beta blood test before starting a Clomid or Femara cycle, because even if a woman believes she has her period, there is always the possibility that there is a pregnancy and the meds will harm a fetus. I think the meds are contraindicated in ectopic pregnancy too so that's another reason to make sure before prescribing them.

If you don't want a medicated cycle next month, then they can't just make you come in for a beta.

  • My office does not do a beta if you are taking clomid, because they have to do a baseline u/s anyway. They do ask you to take an hpt at home before the ultrasound though.

  • I kind of doubt it's a law, but I think it's a good policy before starting a new treatment cycle, personally.

  • Like @BunnyBerry indicated my office requires a pregnancy test prior to starting a round of Clomid. That being said, I do not schedule and go in for the blood test two weeks after my IUI. I just tell them that I'll wait to see if I miss my period (which I don't *ever* seem to do!) and then they do this test along with my other blood work when I come in for my baseline ultrasound days 1-3.
Tried for two years, finally a BFP!
  • @buttmonkey34 Yes, I have to say that the worst part of the pointless period beta was the phone call telling me the good news. Ya think?!

  • @Buttmonkey34 Mine did the same thing last cycle: "Calling with your pregnancy test results...negative."

At first I thought they made a mistake -- like yeah, I know it's negative, hence my period -- and then they explained why they test.
Tried for two years, finally a BFP!
  • I don't get why they didn't require it before my last cycle, I was on Clomid. I have a call in to them today maybe I can do it next week when I go in for my u/s, at least it will save me a trip.

  • I spoke with them earlier and they said they won't stop the Progesterone without a blood test. So I have no choice, I wouldn't care so much if I wasn't paying OOP but whatever.
